I’m pretty sure it’s old Wednesday, not new Wednesday.

Clubs have traditionally played on a regular basis on one or the other. As far as I can remember Barnsley have ALWAYS played on a Tuesday with very occasional modern exceptions where one of the teams has played on a Sunday prior.
More tv driven interference I assume.

Logically that can't be right. If clubs play one or the other then 50% of the time we would be playing an evening game against a team who played on the opposite day to us

In the decade of the 90s we played 32 Wednesday matches so there has been a sharp increase for TV reasons (combined with an huge increase in midweek games this season and last due to the shortened seasons) but they weren't as rare as nostalgia tells us they were.
