The problem is Japan, like Britain has an increasing population and is very overcrowded. Germany has a declining population and is predicted to need an influx of people of working age to shore up the pension system which will reach a 'tipping point' where there are not enough working people to support the Welfare system. Britain's population is increasing and so Germany in spite of all the "Germany is acting out of moral duty" from the media is actually looking after it's own interests (with the added benefit of it helping the migrant situation.

Incidentally,it was interesting to note that BBC clarified the terminology on its news website re use of the terms migrant, refugee, asylum seeker and 'economic migrant. Interestingly, it coincided with my useage of the phrase from an OP I made a couple of weeks ago which prompted some muppet to label me a "bitter racist bigot". My view matches the Yorkshire housewife who simply stated..."Tha dunt invite thee neighbours round for tea when thi pantrys empty". A bit simplistic but valid as we need to address the cause not the symptoms.
(Italy -official figures are 90% landing in Sicily/Lampedusa are young single males defined as 'Economic migrants' Most of the ones housed in this area bear that stat out with virtually no women and children to be seen. In the short term need a system to distinguish refugees from economic migrants and send the latter back which would make accomodating genuine asylum seekers easier to house pending investigation and acceptance. The problem is that process takes too long and anyone can 'claim' asylum and often 'disappear' as they cannot all be tracked.

That's not strictly true though is it? I thought that Japan was sitting on a demographic time bomb due to nearly half the population being over 65? Not that I'm suggesting that mass immigration is a solution in a country the size of the UK, with nearly double the population, and no land suitable for farming.

Russia on the other hand is in desperate need of skilled migrants, especially in provincial cities - birth rates tanked in the 90's when people could barely afford one child, never mind two or three, and have never recovered, whereas life expectancy has risen rapidly. Couple this with large waves of outward migration of skilled workers, both from smaller cities to Moscow and St Petersburg, and abroad, and it's clear to see what's in the post. Along with the fact that the current pensionable age starts at 55, which is crackers.

I think the clue is in the phrase "skilled migrants". As I said there are legal processes ad systems in place for people wanting to improve their lives economically to migrate. Russia due to sanctions coupled with huge corruption and racist xenophobia, whilst in desperate need as you say of skilled workers, is not really in a position to take in many migrants. Putin with his 'cold war' mentality is probably the biggest obstacle of all.

As far as I'm aware, Russia actually has one of the biggest influxes of migrants in the world - though they're mostly unskilled workers from Tajikistan, Uzbekistan etc. They're also needed to do the jobs that Russians won't do though very often the standard of their Russian is atrocious. Not a huge problem for a toilet cleaner, but for a construction worker it's definitely not good!

Regarding skilled workers - it's definitely a more complex issue I agree. Xenophobia is rife against the aforementioned Central Asian migrants, but on an individual level Westerners are hugely respected here - but it seems that fewer and fewer are wanting to come here, for both real issues (the ruble has lost 40% against the euro, Putin is a complete lovely person), and more imaginary ones promoted by the less responsible factions in the western press, such as the perceived unfriendliness and lawlessness of the place, both of which are absolutely mythical.

I bow to your local knowledge and experience. So you like Russia then? Nice to hear someone on here with opinions and views based on experience rather than what hey have been spoon fed by the media. I wonder what some of our "let everyone in it is our fault as imperialist aggressors and they are all victims" would think if they saw what impact the sheer volume of migrants was having in Italy. and on the population here.

When I read your first reply my reaction was "why bring my little old doggies into the sexual life of the migrants?"
    I was a tad confused.
Now I see your apology I can only try to imagine what you must have thought (sober) when you saw the tosh you had written (drunk). I must admit I had a giggle to myself. A psychoanalyst would have had a field day !!!! ;)
