whatever you think about scargill,he has never broke the law,,,the tories, the udm and several newspapers have tried to pin stuff on him and they've all failed, even to the point of having to pay damages...you could ask robert maxwell about this if only he hadnt dissapeared over the side of his boat.
Re: I think it would be a good idea..... Its not about Scargill, its about Barnsley miners getting the truth and justice. The parallels with Hillsborough are too obvious to dismiss with flippant comments. No swearing or abuse to hide behind please. Stick to the argument.
There is clearly something fundamentally wrong in the upper echelons of the Police force and the Police Federation that needs addressing. However, the ill-feeling of many on this board against rank and file police officers, who similar to our armed forces risk their lives daily and are trained to follow orders, is somewhat disturbing. It's to be expected to some degree following the conflicts that went on during the miner's strike pickets, what was it, almost 30 years ago, but with some the animosity is borderline pathological. It seems the powers that be within the Police force need to be weighed and measured and if found wanting made to pay. Hopefully, a reformed leadership can then take the force forward and build the trust of the public back up.
You will obviously get a proportion of "wrong - uns" in the the police like in any other line of job. The vast majority are good lads doing a good job. We are talking here about senior management in the police at that time directing lower ranks what to put in their statements. Surely you cant defend that. It is perverting the course of justice. Barnsley miners deserve proper treatment just like anybody else,
The vast majority of miners were just like the vast majority from all other walks of life, they were law abiding citizens...It was the actions of the police during the strike that changed their mindset, when you have witnessed first hand the lies and contempt shown toward your communities its hard to forgive and you certainly dont forget.Miners for years have been saying the police were liars and how brutal they were, maybe now the truth will come out. As for police risking their lives daily,I reakon theres been more miners killed over the last hundered years than police... Many of the police wernt just following orders, they were like animals, you could see the enjoyment on their face when they were smashing their truncheons over blokes heads,....if you'd been there you'd understand why there is so much hatred.
The cops used to bragg on the picket lines about how much they were earning, which for most of the time meant being sat on their backsides in the sunshine,.they didnt give a toss about the pit closures and the devastation it would bring on the communities..... Its wierd how times change, the cops are now going on demonstrations against cuts and reforms to their forces,i've no sympathy at all.It maybe 30 years but you never forget. As they say, what goes round, comes round.
Your opinion on the police in general was pretty clear in your posts the other night; my point was that you seem to have such a negative opinion of them that your judgement is clouded. Its got nothing to do with being a supporter or a detractor its just about putting things into perspective and realising that there are good and bad in most institutions. In my opinion the majority of coppers are honest, hard working, decent people who have a pretty hard and stressful job to do but still try to do the best job they can.
I told some of the Mets finest that there were next during the 26th March march They just said keep matching fat man
The Met Police who were told by Thatcher (via the Home Secretary/Police Commanders) to go up North were happy to provoke Barnsley miners by standing in line waving wads of overtime money in miners faces laughing Harry Enfield style. It was designed to provoke because they knew striking miners were running short of money and struggling to feed their kids. Emotions were high on both sides. To be arrested when trying to protect your family on some trumped up charge by a laughing Met copper and then reading a made up statement is something you need to experience to understand. Its OK being intellectual about it but if the Govt was intent on destroyiing your line of work for political reasons, like Thatcher was, you wouldnt be so understandig
