Can't argue with the statistics. It's a good record. But when you look.behind the stats he's been a very lucky manager in terms of the draw. The only decent team we played.in the WC was Belgium, who beat us twice. The Euros on home territory was even worse. We faced none of the top ranked teams but managed to lose to an ageing Italy side who failed to qualify for the World Cup. Didn't meet any great team this time until the final where Spain battered us. Performances under Southgate have been tedious so I'll look forward to better performances even if the new manager doesn't get to a final.

I get that his brand of football was divisive. At times it was horrible to watch. Statistically speaking however, there can be no denying he’s one of the most successful managers we’ve had, in terms of win rate and progress in major tournaments. Even his biggest critics can’t deny that. Time for a change, but he’s done well during his stint.

He might end up with you lot when there's a transfer embargo in a few years and Pep walks.

I'm glad to see Southgate go in spite of him being a genuinely decent bloke. Trouble is with my attitude it may seem like a good thing now but its the FA picking the replacement. Things could actually end up worse....

I don't expect us to walk the next tournament. There's a handful of top quality sides out there. We should be one. Don't care if we get knocked out. I do care if we walk out against a team that are no more than our equals on paper and yield 70% possession to them and treat them as if we're Solihull Moors and they're Real Madrid.

I'd say our tournament record under Southgate is consistent with us being one of the top few teams.

People will care about us getting knocked out. The criticism will shift to a manager being tactically naive for being so open, and ignoring the pragmatic element of tournament football.

Without doubt it’s the right decision. Southgate did a terrific job of lifting the England team from rock bottom and getting us world wide respect again. He initially overachieved but for me he ran out of ideas a long time ago and held us back from actually winning a trophy.
Got to say though that he deserves enormous respect and is an absolute class act as a bloke.

Absolutely the right time for him to go for me.
Having resurrected the England team he can leave with his head held high.
There’s no doubt though he had lost a large part of the fan base and was making some strange decisions with his selections ( trying to fit square pegs into round holes) and relying almost exclusively on negative tactics.
Unless they are truly exceptional managers everyone’s stock falls eventually.

The most successful England manager in 50 odd years. What's wrong with being dignified and commanding respect from those you manage.

Sorry mate but I think your analogy doesn't add up. Allerdyce a politician? Sunak an international football coach?

Are you saying you'd rather have good performances instead of reaching the final of a major tournament?

Thank you Gareth for changing the culture in our National team.

Seen a lot of comments regarding him getting us to 2x finals and a WC semi final.

    World Cup 18
    Panama Win
    Tunisia Win
    Belgium Lost

    Columbia Draw (win on pens)
    Sweden Win
    Croatia Lose ET
    Belgium (3rd 4th place) Lose

    Euro 20
    Croatia Win
    Scotland Draw
    Czech Win

    Germany Win
    Ukraine Win
    Denmark Win ET
    Italy Lose on Pens

    WC22
    Iran Win
    USA Draw
    Wales Win

    Senegal Win
    France Lose

    Euro 24
    Serbia Win
    Denmark Draw
    Slovenia Draw

    Slovakia Win ET
    Switzerland Draw (Win Pens)
    Holland Win
    Spain Lose

That’s his tournament record. You could say he’s had easy routes to the semis and finals yet when we play a team just as good as us…..we struggle.

This for me is why ppl think we need a change.

Spot on. That also points to the players being slightly overhyped too.

This about having an easy route to the final, I thought I’d seen somewhere that Switzerland, Slovakia and the Netherlands were similarly ranked to Germany, France and Georgia, who the Spanish beat? Although if true the Spanish beat their opponents much more convincingly

I enjoyed Italia 90 and Euro 96 much more than this one so maybe I do. However there's no reason why we can't win a tournament if we play the right players and play to our full potential, which I dont think Southgate ever did.

We were dire in Italia 90 until the Belgium game, including scraping out of a group needing to beat Egypt in the last game, which needed a set piece header from Mark Wright.
96!we didn’t play much better either for most of games, Scotland & Germany are only ones I recall us playing well.
