I think it was time to move on, but Southgate has done a great job under his tenure. Shame Spain were so good. I think they are unplayable at the moment. Maybe a new incumbent can do that for England? It's a tough call. He leaves England as one of the most consistent teams in Europe in major competitions, but not a winner, sadly. I think only Klopp could deliver that, but I think we will probably end up with Potter, or Howe myself. Let's see.
I was surprised with Stones missing. He was our player of the tournament for me. We didn't score enough goals, so a lot of the reason we did so well was the defence.
I didn't mention not commanding respect? His players obviously respect him. He's done a good job overall but could maybe have gone one better this time, given the tools at his disposal.
96 - Netherlands beaten 4-1 Other than that I can't argue. People look back at 90 and 96 with some romanticism. We were far from amazing in either tournament.
When you look down the route of finding an English manager currently managing at the highest level, there aren't really much choices in comparison to a few years back. We have Eddie Howe, Sean Dyche, Kieran McKenna & Gary O'Neil. Wouldn't want any of those TBH. Think we will have to go down the foreign manager route again or bring back big Sam
This is the thing tho regarding Southgate and near misses in a final. Euro 96 against Germany. Win that on pens and I’d put my mortgage on us winning the Czechs in that final. Not to mention beating good teams like you say with Holland and also Spain. Is that the closest we ever got to winning something given it was only a Semi Final?
You don't think we played well in beating the Dutch 4-1? Edit - I see it's already been covered. Agree about 1990, we were really poor, only really the semi against Germany that we actually put in a performance. Even the Belgium game, we were bang average, saved by a brilliant goal from Platt.
