Saw him in 1984 at St James Park, Newcastle. Absolutely brilliant. A proper performer who has to be dragged off the stage, great to see him still going strong.
It's good to hear from fans that Bruce is still touring and is still sounding as good as ever. Remember about 40 years ago when he was tagged as 'The Boss' of music and soft rock n roll. Does he still do this one on tour (The river, from 1980), which I think is a brilliant piece of musical story telling.
Btw on this subject, I think it's ace that some stars from the 70s and 80s and 90s, are still touring now and are still sounding and looking as good as they used to. Gary Numan and Amy Grant for example, I've seen some of their recent gigs.
@Acido Tyke if you’re lucky he may still do The River, we were lucky enough to hear it last year at Villa Park but I think he’s got such a large back catalogue now hat you never know what you’re going to get, he even takes fans request on the night, he’s quite brilliant when it comes to story telling, a lot of folk think Born In The USA is an American flag waving anthem when in fact it tells the story of a Vietnam soldier getting sent off to fight then the issues he had to deal with when he comes home, even Dancing in the Dark as a story behind it, when he took the Born in the USA album into Sony for release in 84 they told him it didn’t have a hit on it, he argued that he’d spent years working on it and he’d nothing left in him at that point, but they insisted so he went home and wrote Dancing in the dark, which tells the story of a frustrated songwriter unable to write a hit song.
One of the requests on Thursday was Santa Claus is coming to town. They'd not played it on stage in about seven years I believe. He stood there and showed the request placard to a disbelieving band and then they proceeded to play it faultlessly. I reckon they must be able to play just about every song he's ever written at the drop of a hat. And that's a lot of songs!
I saw them play it at the O2 Arena London , my wife and sister are massive Bruce fans , I like some of the stuff but usually go to hold the costs and bags , for me 2 hrs is enough , a bit like Rush who also used to do 3 and half hour sets unless you are big fans it gets tedious after a bit
He's the Best, off to Sunnerland on Wednesday, was at Cardiff and 2 x Wemberlee, think it will be just over 30 times, every show different, doesn't change the set list around as much now but is back to taking sign requests this year, re the River he did it at Cardiff but it's not an ever show song at the moment, more hoping for Racing in the Street......
I'd put Springsteen in my top ten favourite artists but not top five and I agree some of his more downbeat stuff can be a bit, well, downbeat. I was worried about that pre concert but I have to say, bar a couple of songs he sang in memory of friends who had died everything else was fully geared to a powerful rock concert. So glad I went. I've a great deal of respect for him and Van Zandt and they've been there in the fabric of my musical taste for 50 years. I'd definitely go again.
Husband going to Sunderland next week. He’s already started moaning about standing for so long, toilets, price of beer etc.
For anyone that wasn’t there have a look on YouTube for his opening song at Cardiff So young and in Love. New one on me but excellent start to the show First time played since 2013
Hey Mr Boss, tahh kid for actually bothering to reply, with that impressive and detailed answer. When I think of 'Born in the Usa', it reminds me of the words... ".. someone put a rifle in my hand, and sent me off to a foreign land, to go and kill the yellow man!.. ". Hhmm not a pleasant subject is it tbh, which is why I've never been keen on it as a song.
