I watched the Stanley Mathews cup final in a recent YouTube rabbit hole. No subs and about 8 players still playing at the end probably would have needed hospital treatment nowadays. One player was so injured, he just waited around the half way line so he didn’t cause anyone to be onside/offside… different gravy….
Clarkey’s promotion year 78/79 1. SPRINGETT 2. COLLINS 3. CHAMBERS 4. PUGH 5. SAUNDERS 6. McCARTHY 7. LITTLE 8. CLARKE 9. GRAHAM 10. MILLAR 11. BELL Glavin joined at the end of that season and Pugh departed so he got number 4 ….
Yeah but I doubt it was the first system, then changed to the one you mentioned, then changed back by the mid 90s. Could be wrong but it seems unlikely that was the case.
Before our season in the Premier League in 1997/98, there wasn't such a thing as squad numbers. The Football League introduced them for the 1999/2000 season. It was simply 1 to 11 before that, after numbered shirts had been initially introduced in the 1930's.
I think you might be right, my memory seems to be false, I've just been looking at my old programmes....
Bell and Graham joined during the season, Brian Joycey started the first league game (Halifax at home 4-2 to the Reds, Joycey hat trick) at number 9 and our old friend @John Peachy was number 11.
Hey John, what number was banger Banks, who played next door to Ronnie on the pitch lol. Because I also seem to remember Derek Parker wearing no 8 sometimes, even though he was a striker. But Neil Redders also wore both no 8 and 10 din't he. Those old style numbers were a bit confusing at times. And when you look at Currie and Cooper, who mixed it up brilliantly between them in season '88, which would we say was the no 9 and the no 10. So many questions ehh!.
I always (think I can) remember Joe Joyce and Phil Chambers as 2 & 3, and the rock solid Mick McCarthy & Ian Evans as 5 & 6. Ray McHale at 10 and Stewart Barrowclough at 11, and of course Trevor Aylott at 9. Have I got any of those wrong ehh lol.
Massive fan of Banger. Ray McHale surely though? Without him you could not have had Glavin in that midfield. Banger Banks was something else, don't get me wrong.
Remember the Joicey hat trick now you mention it. Did he get injured soon after as I don’t remember him playing much that season
Ray Mchale always wore 10. Banks wore 5, and was a regular in the team before we signed Mchale. Mchale wore ten after being signed to replace Mike Lester.
..........................................1 goalkeeper ....2 right back.............5 centre half.........6 left half............................3 left back ........................4 right half........................10 (deep lying) inside left .............................8 inside right 7 right wing........................................9 centre forward...................................11 left wing This formation can be flexible as 4 4 2, 4 3 3, 4 5 1( if under pressure or up against superior mid field). Wingers drop back to help full backs defensively or full backs over lap on an attack. Wing back formation leaves you exposed on the flanks. When attacking 8 and 10 move forward to support centreforward. If you concede a corner leave at least one player in centre circle or two one either side of centre circle for counter attack. Get the ball in to the opposition third and then play possesion football. That simply is my idea how I like football to be played, but as Allan Clarke said to me on the first ever openday at Oakwell " Its all about opinions".
