I agree the plan surely as it develops still is to sell players but now on for higher transfer fees than before and bring in higher calibre youngsters.
Not at all. Our income was severely reduced last year and the shortfall has to be made up from somewhere. Our recruitment system is clearly superb and we have a strong squad, so I'd completely trust the club to replace whoever departs at a fraction of the price we receive for them, the rest of the money going to balance the books. It's how we operate, and it's fine. What's not fine is selling three or four first team players on one window, but it seems like those days are gone.
10,000 season tickets sold, £6 million tv money & ongoing business plan which is proving effective on the balance sheet ,but I have said before that we possibly only need a couple of players coming in whilst several players moved on thus freeing up wages to supplement such as the lad from Brentford who is on a free , I also think the loan market could be used as it was with Dike, but my response is to fans wanting us to sell our better players because the same fans would be the first ones to moan about the size of the fee etc & I ask a question to those who want sell our better players , is this the way to progress to take the next step up from last seasons success ?
Good post but wanting our better players sold surely has to be detrimental , I think pruning of the squad of some of the fringe players & saving wages would allow us to bring such as the lad from Brentford in on a free plus clever use of the loan market as with Dike last season can help maintain our progress .
That sum doesn’t even cover player wages.10k season tickets + £6m is less than the £11.1m we spent on player wages 2 seasons ago, so we’re looking to add a couple of million just for player wages. I’m guessing in last years accounts there’ll be a loan from the FA to help with operating costs last year. That’ll need paying back starting next season if we can get fans in. I’m not suggesting we shouldn’t be canny about what players we spend on, but the income you mentioned goes nowhere close to our operating costs. Our business model relies on us selling players to balance the books, I feel that’s so obvious it’s almost an insult to have to point it out. It’s hilarious to suggest that the same people who say we probably need at least one high value sale a season are the same ones who moan when we sell them! They’re literally polar opposite views. One is a realistic financial outlook, the other an ignorant moan.
It’s not a case of wanting, merely of realising it’s a necessity. Im sure @Merde Tete would agree with me that it’s hopefully only one and we get a decent sum, and that we already have a replacement in the squad or one lined up. No one wants to tear the squad apart but nor do we want to end up with unsustainable debt.
First of all because we have different opinions does not make me ignorant if that is what you are suggesting , & you do not have to insult me about our business plan I am well aware of our policy & the way it works , last season it was Brown who was moved on to supplement the income & no doubt someone will be sold again to help the finances but my original response was to a comment about a fan looking forward to us selling one of our better players , I still find thought of fans wanting to sell our better players unbelievable , simple as that .
Agree with you completely, the cash reserves have been drained and without a sale or two, we'll be making a loss this year and likely the financial year after.
Sorry if you saw an insult, there was none intended. But you totally misread @Merde Tete post if you thought he was ‘looking forward’ to us selling a player. He posted he’d be concerned if we didn’t sell, because we need to sell to balance the books. You’re really creating friction here where none exists. You say you understand that we have to sell players to balance the books, then claim to be aggrieved by someone posting they’d be concerned if we didn’t do that.
Pruning of the fringe players can only be a good thing, but if we're wanting to keep on an even financial keel and invest in new talent, I just think that a big sale, say around £8-£10 million, will allow us to do that.
In the current climate, I'd expect it's going to much harder to trim the squad in the way that we want, or to rotate out some of the players we would have got a decent fee for, but not our very best players. I'm not sure I see the highly indebted Championship teams teams paying both big fees and big wages for a good while. Nor would it be easy to encourage some form of transfer fee from league 1 and 2 teams or less wealthy teams on the continent that would historically have taken players from us that we were looking to offload.
We made a small loss in the last accounts, we’ll almost certainly have made one last year due to Covid, at some point we have to turn that around. For me personally, if that means we lose one or 2 Crown Jewels I think we can do that. Helik may attract a large fee, Woodrow has had suitors in the past and we appear to be buying strikers. I’d rather not sell a Callum just yet as I see their value on the rise. And we all agree that we’re carrying a few players who have no place in the squad that we need to move on.
I don't think anyone is advocating no sales. But once. Just once, can we get a decent value for it to make it worthwhile. We cant return to the overhaul days of an entire squad again. We have the perfect chance to do just that now with many under long term contracts. One sale, could both plug a gap, and get a few under the radar squad changes we might need. I'd be most concerned IF mowatt leaves and we sell 2 major players. That and losing Dike means thats 4 already to replace
It's merely to add to the comments further up that only talked about fringe players. Moving them on, and it being detrimental selling prized assets. I quoted the wrong the post tbh
I feel like we'll sell one - maybe Helik, but hopefully for £10 million! Anyone think Ritzy might get another chance? Val hasn't seen him and it sounds like he's done well on loan. We were short a CM this year too. I think moving on a few fringe players is important. Miller, Schmidt and Thomas stand out as not fitting in to our squad as it stands. Be interesting to see if Aitchison, Wolfe and ICD geta sniff. Even Oduor too.
As far as creating friction then I recommend a look in the mirror , regarding Merde Tates post to which I responded there were no comments regarding balance sheets or balancing the books, but you are clearly spoiling for an argument to which I will not participate in , I responded to the original comment & you have taken up the reigns, as far as I am concerned thats it for me , have a good day
