That particular performance tactically was kids football level. Unfortunately that’s about Daniel’s level, if we brought him it to coach our kids I’m all for it.
As said previously, he inherited a squad for too good for L1 and managed to get them promoted in 2nd.
Personally that team should have won the division at a canter.
The Championship is often regarded as the best 2 tier division in the world and possibly the 7th best league in Europe, it was a step or two above him in my opinion.

How much of that could have been attributed to the loss of Winkler?

I still think it’s harsh to judge Stendel on the start of that season as he was bedding in a whole new defence & keeper. I don’t care who the manager is there’s bound to be a struggle with that kind of player turnover.

That been said if he did come back he would either have to play a completely different style of football or we would have to take significant losses on several players who wouldn’t suit his system so I can’t see it working.

Repeating myself but wouldn't want him without Winkler.

I agree about Winkler. Think he was a major influence and I don’t think Stendel was the same without him.

Don't think either of his two assistants have worked in professional football since leaving Barnsley/Huddersfield

    No thank you.

This is a coach who insisted on playing Radlinger and thought Bahre was the best person to captain the team in the Championship.

Personally, I find it difficult to comprehend we would want to appoint someone who displayed their limitations as head coach - oulined in previous messages - especially when their successor had more success with the same players.

I hope we're strong enough to not go down the populist route.

Stendel got a team down in the dumps to play brilliant football. Yes some decent players, but let's not detract from the job he did. And how many automatic promotions have people on this forum actually seen? His big mistake was coming back for the next season given his team was ripped up - Pinnock, Lindsay, Davies (on a free admittedly) and even Kieffer Moore the Thursday before the season started!!! I remember he was wary in the close season and I suspect his heart ruled his head. As for "don't go back". We are hardly in a position to be picky. We get through so many managers it's inevitable we're going to run into old friends. And let's face it Oakwell is hardly the theatre of dreams at the moment.

He has nothing like the quality in his squad this time around.

    Lindsay
    Mowatt
    Potts
    Dougall
    McGeehan

Daniel Stendel played the best football I’ve ever seen Barnsley play that season in league 1 yes he had a cracking squad but the squad had just been relegated he got mowatt firing.. I don’t think we’re at championship level any more unfortunately so give me a side that plays good attacking attractive football week in week out over what we’ve just been served up this season..

Winkler hardly pulled up any trees at Huddersfield. And I don't think we had the best squad, Sunderland had experienced Prem league players for eg.

No denying they were a decent squad but that's with hindsight. How many were considered to be the best in June 2018. How many were written off and slated when we went down? Woodrow came in during January that season. Brown was a starlet from u23s playing academy football but came good breaking in under Stendel, Isgrove was sent to Pompey in the Jan window that season, Mowatt wasn't considered good enough until he came back from Oxford and grew under McGeehan's guidance. A lot of lads came good that season and then just like clockwork after promotion when we had a squad probably decent enough for the championship, Conway and Lee saw the pound signs and pulled the rug.

Stendel had a good squad, but that doesn't mean anything does it. How many managers have failed with good squads.

    Its the man management.
