You don't really know how good someone is until they step up - Carl Tiler is a great example - lotherwise of potential but wasn't able to make that step up

John Stones has proved himself in the Premier League. He could never have done that here because we could never have afforded to surround him with players who would have got Barnsley promoted to the Premier League in the current environment of the Championship, because our owner just does not have the money to fund such an exercise. He would never have been valued at the sums he is now valued at as a successful Premier League player whilst plying his trade in the second tier, no matter how well he played.

The question is, did the club do the best deal that it possibly could under the circumstances. Well, the transfer of Stones could eventually be worth as much as £7m to the club when Everton eventually decide to cash in. That will mean that he is the most expensive player that we have ever sold and given that he was only 20 years old at the time, I think that is great value.

I'm not proclaiming to be any sort of expert but after 2 or 3 games of watching Stones I was certain he'd play for England.

I've never seen a kid come in to our team & look that many levels above his team mates, his composure & lack of mistakes was unbelievable.

And yes we had our pants down with the transfer fee.

I look at what Sheff Utd got for Harry Maguire & what others get for far less talented championship & league one players & just think 'what the **** were we doing?'.

I don't think we were a we'll run outfit back then at all
