I like Stuart Pearce. One of my favourite moments in football was when he scored that penalty against Spain, and the reaction afterwards. And he was a brilliant player. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean he'll be a great coach or manager, but I find it difficult to blame him for the current state of our under 21s. The players he's got aren't good enough. The opposition are streets ahead in terms of skill and technical ability. I can't see how that is the fault of Stuart Pearce who sees these lads just a few weeks every year and has nothing to do with their development throughout the majority of their teenage years. That's down to the coaching they get at professional clubs and FA academies.
He's got England to a Semi final and a Final whilst manager of the u21's. This problem with players isn't a new one but it's getting worse. When he first started maybe a Rooney might not play which ok isn't the best but he'll have played 40/45 times for Manchester United and England that season. He had 90% of the best players plus there. Since then it's been getting worse and worse. 2011 he lost the battle with Arsenal over Wilshere when it looked likely he would play upto about February/ March time because Jack was saying publicly that he wanted to play. This summers the worst though. We've got players that haven't played 20 times for the club sides (Jones, Rodwell to name two) but haven't gone to Israel to play for the u21's. There was enough time between the Brazil game and the two, three week tournament. Pearce like many people will look at Spain, De Gea, Batra, Canales, Thiago, Tello, Isco, Muniain. All those players a above are in and around the first teams of the club sides or regulars.
If you don't have 10 plus players missing for a tournament then No, but I'm not sure any team would in any sport.
Kyle Walker Phil Jones Chris smalling i think. Luke Shaw Raheem Sterling Callum McManaman Martin Kelly Gary Gardner Will Hughes Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain Jack Wilshere Jack Rodwell Danny Welbeck Tom Carroll Andros Townsend You said 10, there's a little more but it can't hurt.
England could have gone Butland Walker Caluker Jones Shaw Rodwell Wilshere Henderson Zaha OX Welbeck Steele Kelly Rose chalobah Sterling Wickham Sordell
There's lot of quality in the starting 11 and on the bench. That middle three's very good. Rodwells been playing for city when he started at the end of the season. Same for Henderson.
I know this is another topic but should playing for England in football be treated the same as Cricket? You sign a contract with a central body and your country comes first?

The 2009 squad the vast majority are now established premier league players and were on the verge of breaking through in the respective teams. The 2013 squad is lacking, regardless of injuries or calls to the seniors. There is a large number of the squad who's only consistent game time is the championship or the reserves of their parent club. And there's still £60m worth of transfer fees listed.
A bit rude that. You can't just say youth footballs x. It isn't. Some clubs play some good football. Barnsley been one. Others like Middlesbrough I saw a couple of seasons ago at u18 didn't.
Amazing, coming from the most ignorant and rude individual. Just admit England are a team that lacks footballing ability and we're miles behind. None of us want it to be that way but it is and youve been shown up by your heroes.
Looking through the 2013 squad and I think the future's looking pretty bleak. Not seen enough of Butland to judge so maybe, him, Wisdom & Caulker are the only one's I can see pushing on & playing for the senior's. Danny Rose is a decent left back but can't see him getting in ahead of Baines, Gibbs or Shaw.
