RE: Suppose it's better than...

So you're just plucking figures out of the air to back up your point now? What about the normal walk up attendees who would normally pay £20 who are now paying £5? If there were only 500 of these fans you'd need an extra 1500 stay aways just to make up their short fall on the day. As for this £5 that people will spend in the ground - that's another figure you've just dreamt up.

So we're not really talking £50k at all are we?

I'm with Dyson on this. That is nonsense. Financially these games are rewarding if reduced, so that alone is enough of a reason to do it. My priority is what is best for BFC (the football club we support). Not doing it just to spite the people who don't have a ST is a strange way to look at it. It also adds to the atmosphere, we possibly sell more programmes etc, and some may come back at full price occasionally if they enjoy it. I can't think of a reason not to do the fiver games.

RE: and if you have a couple of kids then the cost can very easily

    Exactly

But if these people are only going to come when it's £5 and there's no way you can have £5 games on a regular basis - it's no loss to the club

The club is a business and if you can't afford a season ticket or to pay £20 on a regular basis it's not worth the club's effort trying to attract you to one off games.

    Harsh but true.

Not at all. The average attendance last year was around 11/12k. The Forest game attracted an extra 2/3k away fans. That's 15k. You've got an extra 5k home fans in on top of the usual 20 quid a pop.

Those fans would be more likely to buy merchandise if they've taken a child or someone for the first time (for example, I went with the missus who'd never been before and spent a tenner on a program and a scarf). I'm sure I wasn't the only one to do that.

Thats not the point, it's not about being a loss to the club, it's about being a potential gain. There's **** all to lose from getting more people into the ground, and everything to gain potentially.

I've bought things in the past because they've been cheap, liked them so much that I've bought more, for example a series on TV. Might go down to a fiver, but if I enjoy it, I'd happily pay full price when I could afford to. I think the same could be said with regards to this. If a family go along and their little ones enjoy it, they'd want to go back wouldn't they? If they can afford to I'm certain their parents would take them again

Whilst I agree with the principle of reduced costs for games...

... it may not have a great financial advantage you don't know how many would have turned up anyway at £20 with it being Forest.

The problem was the choice of game.

But I doubt there would've been more than 15k, even with the extra away support. What was the home game with Donny? I'd expect it to be similar, if not less than that.

    Don't let Vegas_tyke read this...

He loves having a slash up against a wall in the West Stand. It's the only reason he goes to games...

Great idea....Be nice to get a couple of my Leeds United friends down to see a game at Oakwell, at that price i reckon they'd give it a whirl, wouldn't convert them like, but would add a couple extra to the crowd....

Shocked at James G response to the idea, never took him for being a spoiler....

    Agreed

What both James and dreamboy have forgotten is there are lots of barnsey fans who have basically given up on the club after three seasons of **** and £20+ isn't attracting them back. Offer them a game at £5 and they will pay it because if theyre right and we're crap it isn't much to lose. play good football in front of a full house and some of those £5 people might just decide to pay £20 for the next home game and become regulars again.
The problem in the past has been that these offers are normally at the end of the season so there are no games left for fans to start coming back afterwards and we generally under davey played **** and/or lost which again stopped them coming back. "£20 to watch that ****? I wouldn't have paid a fiver if i'd known" is a comment that i guarentee will have been said in barnsley at some point.

Then there's the fact that even if someone who takes up a £5 ticket cant afford to start coming back they might just decide to buy a shirt instead. It's a one off purchase for them so its entirely possible but the club makes £40 out of them. Not a bad amount when previously they'd have got nowt.

And as for james' point of it's only £20 every few weeks and people can easily afford that. £25 is only a few more. people could afford that so i think PC should put the price up. in fact £30 every two weeks isn't a lot, get it up to £30 and when we've got no game for three weeks **** it, up it to £40, it's only about £13 a week and anyone can sacrifice another couple of pints a week to find the extra.

The club should aim to fill every seat.

I remember reading a quote along the lines of: every empty seat at a football match is a failure of the board of directors.

Fill the place up, at a fiver a pop. I love Oakwell when it's sold out.

I speak as a season ticket holder. Other people getting discounted tickets doesn't upset me in the slightest.

Well said neutrino, it appears there is overwhelming support for this on here with just 2 against it...

It wont happen anyway, principally cos its come from here but its a missed opportunity by the club in my opinion...

Thanks everyone for the input into the debate..
