Re: there is also the Edinburghs equivalent of Harrods too Think it might be Jenners you are meaning. At the west end of Princess Street.
Depends what you're after. http://lmgtfy.com/?q=Jekyll+and+Hyde+Edinburgh - Take a look at this. I'm not gothic, but I thought the idea was awesome. The toilets are hidden in some bookcases too. A bit quirky. You don't seem the type to enjoy a cocktail either but they concoct their cocktails by adding 'gluttony' 'sin' 'greedy' **** like that in big jars on the back shelf. Of course, its just Gin and **** but I thought it was quite cool. As for tourist things to do... The cobbled road up tot he castle has a couple of cool attractions. Whisky museum and a few cafes. My ABSOLUTE favourite though was Camera Obscura. £14 an adult ticket, but so much fun! Took around 2 hours to look around everything. Basically 6 floors of optical illusions. I'm **** at selling it, but seriously its great! The main attraction is meant to be a submarine type periscope on the top of the building with a view of the Castle, which I thought was *****... but the 6 floors are brilliant! http://lmgtfy.com/?q=Camera+Obscura Grass market is great at night time. Lots of pubs, plenty of place to eat. Go and do Greyfriars tour too. Again, not everyones cup of tea. Hear about the story of Greyfriars dog, 'Bobby' and that graveyard is also where J.K Rowling got her inspiration for character names! Plenty to be going on with
For seafood there's a Loch Fyne eatery just up the road from the Royal Yacht. And you can get a nice Britannia baseball hat to piss the Jocks off.
Obviously depends on your thing but in addition to the stuff above I'll add: Food: A good Thai place on the lane between George and Queen Street: www.dusit.co.uk/ A high end contemporary restaurant between the Grassmarket and Lothian Road: www.timberyard.co/ A nice Californian restaurant just off Rose Street (they do a reasonable menu before 6pm): www.calistoga.co.uk/ A good Chinese place at the Haymarket: www.chop-chop.co.uk/ Bars: These pubs are just off Princess Street and are hidden gems. They're next to each other and are handy if your loving around that area: http://www.guildfordarms.com/ www.caferoyaledinburgh.co.uk/
We did this last time we were there: http://www.edinburghliterarypubtour.co.uk/ Can't recommend it enough. Get pissed on a pub crawl while two actors perform just for you. You see some smart old boozers too, although our lass and I are such alchies that we'd already been in them all.
Edinburgh is a great city, best viewed from the castle (which is interesting in itself) to see the layout of the city. Walk up the Royal Mile, plenty of pubs and restaurants (but the cheaper ones are in the streets to either side) and the Scotch Whisky Experience at the top is excellent. Leith is worth a visit, too.
