I don't know if it's because I'm a few years older or not but I can't say I enjoy town that much now. The only places I like going are Brammahs & Walkabout. Wellington Street is awful. Stereo is a drug fuelled shithole, Che / Coco bar is about the only bar I don't mind going in on Peel or Wellington Street. A few years back Walkabout was where we went at the end of the night & it was great, Che was loads better when it was Livingstones & a couple of places on Wellington Street were decent like Funny Gals & Voodou or they at least seemed decent after a skinful. I find it hard to enjoy Wellington street even when I'm drunk these days
I don't get drunk - so it's even harder. I used to love Livingstones upstairs, I still miss it now. I thought Funny Gals would have stayed open longer than it did, it's been made really tiny now that it's Rios. The Blue Room is alright on Wellington Street, but that's about it.
It's pretty desolate, even Doncaster is a better night out these days. High alcohol prices and the smoking ban have killed off a lot of town centres though, it's only the big cities like Leeds and Sheffield that are still lively (oh and York is still pretty good).
It's pointless going out on any other day except Sunday on a bank holiday weekend as everybody goes out all day/night on the Sunday so Friday, Saturday and BH Monday it's empty. When it's not a BH weekend, Saturday night is the best/fullest night in my experience, but even then if you aren't on the normal 'circuit' (as described by Moose Tyke) you will find empty pubs - like the White Bear area at 11pm (full at 8pm) and the Wellington Street area at 8pm (full at 11pm).
