RE: PS

I agree that teachers should be paid more, but that does not mean I should agree with them going on strike....they won't get any public sympathy that way.

    That's fair enough

I'm not sure it's the right thing to do either, but neither is packing it in and wasting all that experience and training.

You should put your theory to an economist

You'll have the whole thing sorted in no time.

It needs much better pay though to attract the level required when you consider these people are teaching the scientists and doctors etc of the future......when people with science degrees can get a far better income working in industry then you end up with the situation I heard today that a minority of teachers actually teach the subject that their degree is in.
So it's not about striking over a couple of percent because it's going to take a damned sight more than that to sort it out.

And then we have those parents that don't give a **** and their offspring that just disrupt lessons - but that's another argument.

On that typical English Trait comment, can I just ask whether the NUT went out on strike in support of the council based public sectors workers, the police force and prison officers etc when they went on strike recently with regards to pay.

Or was it business as usual until it impacted them directly?

I agree Eaststander, they should pay teahcers more in order to attract those of a higher standard. But methods must be introduced to purge the current incompetenets from the profession.

RE: An English Trait - Damm those on strike

The police can't strike. Teachers complain about having to deal with unruly kids, the police have to deal with far worse. But thats their job too.

If the police do strike I would hope that they would be controlled by miners on horseback wielding batons.

Was that one school or the whole of the country?!

There are some schools were there are individual grievances - not been a national strike for 20 + years!

RE: What's your view on miners?> nt

I'm not anti teacher or anti strike. I think the miners made a mistake striking, if that is what you mean. Fot that I blame Arthur Scargill.

If people are facing job lossses and all talking has failed then obviously strike action might be the only option. But it should be an option of last resort and not used to further unrealistic demands.

I'm a teacher and don't agree with it

I think we are well paid but I'm not going against the wishes of my union.

Yes it was Mr Scargill's fault!

But obviously I blame Mrs T and the Tories for the treatment of our families and area in the following years. That is beside the point though.
