Be good to see them both back in the squad.

Some proper selection headaches for LJ, a good thing obviously. I could pick about 5 teams in varying formations and I'd still not be happy about who I've left out.

You mean, the Hourihane that scored 13 goals from midfield and got even more assists, before getting the Player of the Year nod? That Hourihane?

Do you think Bree is better than Wabara?

Can't find places for Watkins or Crowley.

Should last season's stats guarantee him a place in the team? Or are they now irrelevant?

I'm basing my argument for Hourihane's inclusion on the fact that he was arguably our best player last season. He has a full campaign at this level under his belt, but yet, after a few games, people are already ready to cast him out for an unproven (yet talented) rookie, who is barely out of nappies.

CH should be judged on the here and now, as should Crowley. That's my point, last season is irrelevant. On what I've seen so far this season I'd go with Crowley in the AM position. Not casting CH aside just picking what I consider to be the best team now.

No idea. Not seen enough of Wabara, although the three times I have he's been steady. Quite comfortable with either starting, but would probably go with Bree. If only we had this 'problem' at left back.

One final (and general point) before I depart - if we play one up top again, no Winnall and lose, this place will be ace.

People are naming teams without Hourihane in them? Wow.

How we going to score? The only threat we have in league games is from his set pieces.

    Anyway:

    Davies
    Bree Roberts Mawson Smith
    Watkins Pearson Scowen Hourihane
    Smith Winnall

Bench - Townsend, Nyatanga, Wabara, Digby, Williams, Crowley, Jackson.

Not ideal having Hourihane on the left but neither Williams or Crowley are natural wide men either so it's a square peg in a round hole regardless.

From a defensive point of view Winnall could drop back to the left hand side if needed like last season

Yeah, I haven't seen Wabara at all yet, so would like to see him play tomorrow, but would be happy if Bree started.

Agree - need to go with Smith and Winnall for me.

    That's fair enough mate.

I like the look of Crowley, but he just seems a bit too raw at the minute, but he'll develop. I think we need to be starting with the experience and recognised quality of Hourihane, and introducing Crowley into games late on, when the opposition are getting a bit leggy.

Hourihanes deliveries from set pieces are priceless for us.

All fair points mate. It was the toughest decision for me tbh. Struggling to fit them both in though.

No idea. With Smith's signing, Harris showing some signs of promise, and Williams coming back to fitness, we've now got a team that doesn't pick its self.

People are stuck in the past if they think it's defensive by default. Football has moved on. Barca, Real, Chelsea, Arsenal, Man Utd, Man City more often than not, Liverpool, Bayern all usually play one up front.

But we are not any of those teams. Those teams have a player (worth millions) who can do that roll. We don't and can't afford a player who can. As such we shouldn't by default play 1 up front. At this level it very rarely works

Agree with that. It's a great system if you've got a great striker to play the lone forward role. We haven't. And it's not just that we haven't got one right now, we've had very few in the years I've been watching who would make a decent fist of it. Ashley Ward could have probably done it. David Hirst too. And David Geddis. But a lot of the great strikers we've had looked so good because they had a great strike partner. Aylott had Parker, Currie played by far his best football alongside Cooper, Hendrie had Wilkinson and Shipperley had Dyer. Payton had whoever could put up with the miserable bugger.

Winnall and Smith might be another great strike partnership, but I have a feeling if they're only ever played on their own, we'll not get to see the best of either.

The massively interesting thing from this thread....We've now got a decent squad. People arguing about who should play where and who shouldn't rather than arguing about lack of players or options. It's actually nice to see.

Completely agree with the. Aguero is ideally suited to the role and has David Silva and Nasri and Toure running off him. We've got Comor Wilkinson and a couple of 12 year old loanees.
