Chelsea for me , Cook,Osgood, Bonnetti,Webb,Harris etc etc ,saw em loads of times in Yorkshire most time Hillsborough Never been to Stamford Bridge though . PS Only if Barnsley FC were away though .
I think you might be me!! My excuse is, it was only up to the age of 10 that I 'loved' L**ds - and I've detested them more than any other team since (other than Sevco - obviously!)
Liverpool and Rochdale for me.Liverpool after they beat Leeds in the 1965 cup final and Rochdale after having a pint in their social club before playing Barnsley and watching rain coming through the ceiling dropping into a bucket. Thinking back to the Rochdale game we had to fill a form in before they let us into the club.It was a little over the top we thought at the time, name , address occupation etc and a charge of 10p.2 weeks later I got a letter from Rochdale with a card stating I was now a life member of Rochdale supporters club.
Ipswich Town while I was at Uni Cooper, Burley, Mills, Osman, Butcher, Wark, Talbot, Muhren, Thyssen, Brazil, Mariner, Gates Jumpers for goalposts, marvellous.
I still prefer Bootham Crescent to the new one, new one's nice but i prefer proper grounds. Don't like all the coloured seats they look like lego bricks.
Ah kno were about same age Paul and can't agree more... as a kid it was ..Best. Law. Charlton (ah also remember 1966) Man U first big English European nights and ah wer transfixed...little bit of Leeds cos they were up there bt Reds in 1970 1st game and the days of Clarke/ Hunter were a dream....COYR
Leeds in the 70’s Giles, Hunter, Clarke and all that. I’ve always been a Barnsley fan but as a teenager it was the atmosphere ( and obviously the talent ) that I wanted, in those days you had to shout to talk to the nearest fan sometimes! I was a football nut in those days, so ai’d quite often watch Us, Leeds and one of our Central League games midweek. Then gradually as I got older sanity prevailed ( well I say sanity) and Barnsley was it!
I lived in London during the 80s when Barnsley lad Keith Birkinshaw was managing Spurs and a number of my mates were Spurs supporters and always trying to get me to head to White Hart Lane with them. A girl who I fancied was a Gooner so I spent most of the time, when my BFC commitments allowed, on the North Bank at Highbury!
Liverpool I was obsessed in the late 70's early 80's posters of Keegan and Toshack on my bedroom wall my late dad took me to the league cup final v Forest and fa cup semi v Arsenal at hilslborough but in the Arsenal end i couldn't hind my allegiance but they were great with 10yr old self. Funnily enough the first time I went to Anfield was that foggy night was it 85 and by then I was firmly in the Barnsley camp.
My mum and more than half my family are from Leeds and I used to go every other week to visit...this was the 70s so unfortunately it was Leeds for me...Jonny Giles fav player...I still have a soft spot for them.....I know , I know!!
When i was 10, and if Barnsley were a fair way away, my much older cousin used to take me to either Elland Road or Bramall Lane to watch other games. He took me to Hillsborough on a couple of occasions too, but just twice....onist!
Barnsley , Barnsley reserves , Barnsley intermediates & Barnsley boys , no other teams of any significance .
Arsenal and Inter Milan for me. Loved Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira.. liked watching the Brazilian Ronaldo for inter.. seem to remember he got an injury, was out for a while and when he came back someone had been given the number 9 shirt.. so Ronaldo wore some like 8+1. Seemed hilarious to a youngish lad at the time.
