You're probably right

well certainly with football. In these days of proffessionalism you usually have a cuople of leaders on the pitch.

cricket might be an exception ...

The Cricket captain helps pick the squad I guess,

    so it is slightly different.

Its just that its seen as sign of weakness when a manager wont drop his Captain.

However if he didnt have a "Captain" in the 1st place he could pick the team on merit.

Thank you for your opinion ....

.... my opinion is that centre half is a good position for a captain because all the game happens/develops in front of them, they have a fairly good picture of what's happening and who's pulling their weight or not as the case may be.

They are usually big, strong players, most of which are good leaders and talkers and mostly are well respected by their team mates because, if you have ever played footall, it's quite a tough, physical position to play.

I concede that centre midfield is also a good position for a captain, for similar reasons in that they are generally involved in the play for the majority of the game and Gerrard is a good captain but, in my opinion, he's less assured of a starting place than John Terry because of the competition for places in midfield and there's every chance that he won't play if McClaren favours Lampard in the centre, with say Michael Carrick playing just behind him, and Beckham and Cole in the wide positions.

By the way, in my opinion, Gerrard would have played exactly the same way in the European Cup Final if he hadn't been the captain, that's just the way he plays, regardless of whether he's wearing an armband or not. Thanks for your time.

PS. Greatest ever English captain - Bobby Moore - Centre Half

    Englands luckiest ever Captain

    Bobby Moore.

I think Terry is less assured of a place than Gerrard.

We have some decent Centre Halfs on the way up, whereas we only have Gerrard who can play like Gerrard.

Don't give me 1-trick-pony Lampard, who is gonna be sweating on getting games for Chelsea this season.

    I'm with the nose

    That's No's obviously.

Question: Is Terry a really good centre half?
Answer: Yep, when Claude Makalele plays infront of him

Problem is we dont have anyone as good as Makalele playing for England, and no way does he play for England like he does for Chelsea because of that.

    Gerrard for me.

Typical that, we win the World Cup once ......

.... and the captain was "lucky". No mate, he was a world class player, ask the likes of Pele and Beckenbaur, cos I think they are better qualified to judge than you.

And by the way, Gerrard is a great player FOR LIVERPOOL, he hasn't been better than average for England and we have lots more options in midfield than we have at centre half (Terry, Ferdinand ..... er campbell ... er Carragher, loads pushing for John Terry's place isn't there?) ... so Gerrard isn't even guaranteed a shirt, not least because nobody has worked out his proper position yet.

John Terry will be a colossal captain and a regular for England for the next 10 years barring injuries

Young Ferdinand , Curtis Davies , Woodgate

It looks like Wes Brown as well if the squad is to be believed.

I consider Pele to be one of the most over-rated players of all time. I don't deny he was a good player but he isnt fit to lace Maradona's boots.
