What was the point of Declan Rice when we were in possession. He either stood in between two of their players making it stupid to pass to him or he stood behind one of their players making it impossible to pass to him. Zero brains some of these players.
They might be nobodies with plastic Welsh passports lol, but what if we don't batter them. Or even worse, what if we under perform yet again and they beat us, and we only go through ahead of them on goal diff. Southgate and the players can't be defended for that performance and that attitude last night, and Im disappointed to have to say that.
The USA worked very hard tbf. I don’t think Gareth Southgate is a bad manager as such, but he has this inbuilt ‘thing’ to be cautious all the time, he doesn’t think let’s change things and give the opposition something to think about, he thinks let’s tighten up first and foremost then try to attack a bit. Also I don’t think Stirling and Kane are the go to front two when we aren’t on top. Stirling seems to get lost and Kanes idea of pressing and tracking back seems to be a couple of strides then give up.I know he’s injured but if he can’t do it why play him!
Completely agree. I’ve watched a fair bit of Rice & I just don’t get it. It’s not to say he isn’t a decent player as he clearly is but there’s nothing special about him. Good engine, physically strong & committed but his passing range is very limited. If you look at the best players in the world in that role he’s nowhere near. It’s no coincidence his best games come against the better sides where he gets to show off his defensive attributes because on the ball he’s lacking. Jamie Carragher who I normally think talks sense said before the tournament he’s a £100m player which I think’s ridiculous. Real bought Tchouameni for around £70m & Newcastle bought Bruno Guimares for £43m. Two players who are a couple of levels above Rice. I think it’s just a general overhyping of English players. Grealish going for £100m, Maguire going for £80m etc.
