Wingers don't exist in modern football. Everyone wants to cut in and shoot themselves. Managers play their attacking wide players on the "wrong" wings. I genuinely don't think I could name a side that plays two wide men who's primary aim is to take on a full back on the outside and cross for a striker.
I get where you're coming from and agree. I think it's a relatively recent thing, Beckham was a wide midfielder/winger especially in his earlier days, Salah always gets called an inside forward because he cuts in a lot more than he crosses (although he does that alot more than he did origionally) and drifts in and out of the box. I think it's just all melded into one position now... Completely different styles though.
The best way to describe Humphrys is a wide forward player. I’ll agree that he’s not a central striker. I’m with YT that he’s being asked to play there due to lack of options. Humphrys IMO wasn’t signed to play central. It was to give Darrell the option of changing it up. Next season I’d expect to see us address the central striker. If we don’t then we are up the creek.
It would have been ideal to get a quality loan in. DKD fills the permanent quality forward spot we lost in Cole (even though loads said Cole was rubbish) but we didn’t get a Mcatee level player in on loan. DKD is a quality forward option though that any team in this league would love to have, that seems to get overlooked a bit.
I see it the other way around. DKD the replacement for McAtee (I think DKD is better) but there was no replacement for Cole.
In terms of the type of player DKD is I agree he’s not a typical number 9 and is more a Mcatee type. Either way he’s a great forward option. My frustration is more that if we could only afford one permanent quality forward option why we didn’t do a second one on loan.
