One of the best gigs I've been to for sound, was seeing the Jools Holland Band at Sheffield City Hall. He had the place absolutely rocking with a 30 odd piece ensemble. His guest on the night was Dave Edmunds who had a hit years ago with " I Hear you knocking". All in all it was a magical night. Wouldn't mind seeing Jools and his band again.
Why have so many forgotten that this is the thread about the gig you never went to? Anyway, the best gig(s) must have been the one when David Live was recorded. I'd have happily died after hearing that saxophone, especially on Sweet Thing. Had I been there..
Jealous. I was just a little bit too young for festivals then. Started my gig career in 93, Blur, Pulp and Supergrass at Alexandra Palace. Except we never saw Supergrass, as the tw@tting bus driver got lost in Leicester....
Gig career start 1973: Thin Lizzy (sang Whisky in the Jar 3 times), Suzy Quattro, Slade Sheffield City Hall. Our teacher took 4 of us.
I'm assuming this was your secondary school teacher? And closer to the end of school than the beginning, I'd hope!
Well it was "middle school", as they called it then - our last year before high school. We were 13. Amazing experience, but ruined by Noddy Holder insisting that everyone should hold hands with the person in the next seat and then give them a kiss! At that age, and between 2 females, I was mortified. I have never recovered. Scarred for life.
To be fair, it could have been a lot, lot worse. If you'd been sat next to your teacher, for instance.Or Noddy Holder.
Leo Sayer,Suzie Quatro,Wizard all at the Civic in the 70.s. About 18 years ago called in the Corn exchange in Leeds and there was a free concert on which was also broadcast live on Radio 2. Hot Chocolate,Steve Harley,Go west and Chris DeBurgh.
Started with some thrash band in the Alabama Alligator in early 1989. Might have been Violator, or Annihilator, but I don't count that, so my first gig was Reading Festival in 1989. After surviving some Hell's Angel throwing himself out of a pub window I was sat underneath, the first band on stage was Gaye Bykes on Acid. Did the full weekends at Reading 1989-94, Glastonbury 93-95, Phoenix 93-94, Leeds free fest 1993-94, Download 2003 or so and Leeds 2004 or 5. Also did a day trip to the last day of Reading in 1995 with Neil Young headlining, but can't remember how I drove home afterwards. Too many other gigs to mention. Another one that I was really annoyed about was taking my wife to see Killing Joke at SO36 in Berlin - it was the name of a song on their first album. They cancelled not long before we went and it ended up being a family trip just before Christmas.
David Bowie Ziggy Stardust at Leeds Uni in 1973 Had a ticket but gig was cancelled because the height of the stage was too low or something daft like that. Went to Leeds and came back disappointed but not as disappointed as finding out that my ticket, in the breast pocket of my jacket, had disappeared because the pocket liner was torn and the liner at the bottom of the jacket was torn so it fell out at some point. I think it was rescheduled at the Rollerarena. It still hurts!
