Let me put it another way then. If there were clubs prepared to pay £5m for him why did none of them jump in when the news came out that a proposed £2m move to Luton was on the cards? Surely they'd jump at the chance to get a £5m striker at more than 50% discount?
I think the infuriating thing for me is how many people tried to pretend he wasn’t that good to support the transfer fee. It’s one thing exaggerating his injuries but there were fans trying to make out he wasn’t outstanding for us. If you couldn’t see that he was top quality you honestly don’t know what you’re watching. Scores all kinds of ball, can play either side in a front 3, good in the air, physically strong, good dribbler. Luton fans can’t believe their luck. Even above there’s people questioning his scoring record & not mentioning that he played wide under Val for the most part & would often only play between 45 & 60 minutes as he rotated his forwards every match. And they also don’t mention that he was in the worst team in the league last season & relied on barely any service.
Imho we took what was on offer. There was probably a deal with the player saying that play well for us and we will keep you informed of bids and you will get your move. I do think he was our player of the year and was worth more than £2million and there would have been a few suitors. However these bids could have been in installments etc etc and our club due to "con his way" and pals running the club went for the cash on the table. Result Barnsley get some cash....player probably trembles his wages. Other players were also quickly offloaded too....was it like Pinnock...totally different circumstances but net result is we lost two fantastic players for less than their real valuations, as Brentford , Luton and anyone at the club will admit to....unfortunate.
