You have to remember that Postcodes were created by Royal Mail solely for the purpose of sorting mail. They were allocated based on regional Mail Centre (S) and then delivery office (subsequent 2 numbers). Penistone has an S36 Postcode because it makes no sense for Royal Mail to send mail for Penistone from Sheffield Mail Centre to Barnsley Delivery Office when it’s miles away, and they have a Delivery Office much closer in Stocksbridge. It’s the same with Bolton-on-Dearne, Goldthorpe, and Thurnscoe - they’re all in the Barnsley borough but it’s easier to serve from Manvers Delivery Office instead of Wombwell, so they ended up with Rotherham as their post town. Until Sat Navs appeared, a Postcode meant nothing to most of us. The problem now is that Sat Navs apply Royal Mail’s Postcode data to geographical maps and display the post town from the address.
Mexborough was initially meant to be allocated to the DN13 postcode area, but it never ended up being used.
Type in Google maps 1st option comes up with Penistone. Sheffield 2nd just Penistone. How do I delete the 1st option lol.
Because the “Post Town” for Penistone is Sheffield. See above. Maps just use address data from the Royal Mail database.
Penistone is Penistone - a town in it's own right. It is not part of Barnsley - the town, nor Sheffield - the city. If Penistonians want to say they're from Sheffield or from near Sheffield when in fact they are closer to Barnsley is their prerogative. However doing so - and as mentioned above - opens them up to accusations of snobbery (and poor Geography).
I believe we are all aware of that. And aware It's part of the metropolitan borough of Barnsley. as is Wombwell. As is Hoyland. Both towns. To a southerner I'm near Huddersfield. Or even leeds and Manchester. Means bugger all tbf.
From an administrational point of you I agree but geographically it's not part of Barnsley just as Hoyland isn't part of Barnsley (from Geographical perspective).
We all I think should be aware of that also. Unless You live in Barnsley town. The rest of us are not geographically linked. In real terms but we are all geographically linked to south yorkshire. As you say it is their perogative. But how many people from Hoyland or Wombwell would say from Sheffield or near Sheffield though. Even though both are around the same distance as Penistone. (None that I know of.) Penistone has more than it's fair share of snobs. (So I was told by colleagues. Who lived there) But Its more of a Shame when some of our own pull us down. (I'm not saying that's the case of Folk from Penistone. Maybe others that live there could comment on that) Especially those that move away. Remember that Guy who lives Lincoln way. (I think it was.) Worra nob/snob he was. (A very bitter guy who must have had a run in with my mrs lol. And she's not from Barnsley originally wo betide anyone that pulls us down )
Postcodes only mean where the nearest large postal sorting office is.. Take Grimsby and Scunthorpe, they both have DN postcodes. But no one would ever say they came under or were anything to do with Doncaster
Nearly in Darton then.Old mate of mine lives up OFDrive.Went to see him a few weeks ago his wife had passed away.I’m just off Spark lane so not far.
