Noel and Simon were top blokes away from football. Saw them a couple of times in the pre-season IOM tournament while I was on holiday there . Got to say Blackburn didn't half like a drink back in them days but not lairy with it
3rd August, 1968. Prior to the first teams friendly game against Blackburn, the reserve teams played, which I refereed. Bryan Douglas playing for Blackburn Reserves!
The first time I remember seeing Blackburn Rovers at Oakwell they had Shearer playing up front for them, Duncan not Alan though.
Excellent. Thank you for that. My first league game watching Barnsley was the following Saturday and we lost 3-2 at home to Barrow.
If its the same one I'm thinking of didnt he also play for Huddersfield town and was another BFC nemesis?
Think so, only played a handful of games for Blackburn after being poached from Swindon I think. The start of Kenny Dalglish reign When Jack Walker was investing heavily I think.
That would be John Price. He played against us for Stockport before moving to Ewood Park. Not much taller than five feet but an effective player despite that. Another who died young
I was thinking about him as well mate, but thought it couldn't have been as he played early 90s. Then moved to Villa and played nearly 10 years there iirc
Back in them days i used to sit watching teletext for the up to date away scores. This particular game sticks in my mind, Come from behind, Rammell debut and late goal.
That's the one mate. I "borrowed" Dad's car and went with a mate and did Blackpool for the weekend lol Dad not pleased when I got home
My first game I attended in the flesh to watch Barnsley was away at Blackburn on 10th October 1981. Rainy day, We lost 2-1, Banks penalty to equalise and then conceded again quickly. Glyn Riley was carried off, he had replaced Aylott who was injured the week before. Always looked at Blackburn, pre-Walker era, as a club with a lot of similarities to us . A town with industrial heritage, working class, no frills, and a good honest football team and club. The names Brotherston, Gennoe, Garner, Fazackerley, Branagan, Keeley, Rathbone, Miller seemed to be constants v Barnsley for several years, home and away.
Think my first time was when Noel Brotherston was playing for them ... just remember the hair. Can't imagine a modern footballer sporting that barnet
Thanks to my Blackburn connections I met Ashley Ward in the executive suit at Ewood Park after we were beat as I recall 2-1? Was it premier league season? I think Hristov was playing for us so might have been first season back in Championship and also I met the foreign security Jack Straw with his son having a pint before the game in a pub near the ground. Also my grandad ran another pub in the 1960s near to Ewood Park called the Brown Cow.
