Dolly Grays,, that’s a blast from the past. One of those ‘fall-back’ night clubs in that if you couldn’t get in anywhere else, you knew you’d get in there. Have to say though I’ve had some great nights in there

True. But the new ‘magic’ is things like 4DX, IMAX etc. something we definitely haven’t got or had.

That’s right Freddie but talking pictures were magic once as were moving pictures themselves and Barnsley had them at the time so I stand by my point, we’ve had the magic of cinema for over a hundred years. It’s relevant to the time.
    Splitting hairs maybe but….

Paid our first visit since the redevelopment last week. I'm sorry to say we were massively underwhelmed.

Really? Out of interest what was it that disappointed you?

For me the lack of shops is a bit disappointing but visually I think it has turned the town centre around and hopefully as the units fill up and Cineworld opens it will make a big difference again

The range of stores was limited, to say the least. It was a bit like they'd picked the Alhambra Centre up and moved it fifty yards down the road. The eateries looked unappealing. Nothing to do with The Glassworks but elsewhere in town, the Jeremy Kyle outside broadcast is still alive and functioning in what was Peel Square. And Marks and Spencer is dying on it's arse ahead of the move to the Peel Centre next year. In all honesty, you'd still take the opposite turn and head for Meadowhell.

Completely agree with the range of stores, hopefully that's something that will change. My hope is that when flannels opens and the glassworks fills up that it will have a knock on effect of shops re-entering the Alhambra due to how close it is and between them I reckon there's enough space for quite a range.
The eateries I'm not sure about I haven't really used any but I think there are still some to open. I have noticed that on an evening falco lounge is fairly busy with people having a quiet drink and a meal and people have been sat on the balcony of the market kitchen too though which was the first time in my life that I've seen people drinking and eating in Barnsley town centre without it being a drunk rowdy atmosphere

Completely agree about peel square. That needs to be sorted somehow. M&S I wouldn't be surprised to see taken over by somewhere like Primark for a bargain price.l but anything could happen really.

On the meadowhall thing I'm an odd one (shush) I go to meadowhall maybe once every 2 weeks which for a man is quite a lot apparently. Prior to the glassworks being built I had been to Barnsley town centre for shopping on a night about once in my life. Since it's opened I've been about 6 or 7 times. If I want to go to tkmaxx after work I've been to Barnsley because it's just a much nicer store and walking through the glassworks lot up is actually quite enjoyable (told you I'm weird). I've been when I needed to go to JD sports too and sports direct but didn't want to face the big crowds at meadowhall. And I've combined a trip to Morrisons at night with a stroll round cheapside and the glasworks and a casual walk into the shops too. Don't forget that on an evening there is free, secure parking in the glassworks too.

It's not perfect due to a lack of shops but that should change. Everything else about it is in my opinion a massive massive improvement on what used to be there.

It doesn't need one. But it doesn't need a river island either or a tk maxx or a Wilko or anything at all. It's just nice to have things.
