Wkfd council are still operating a small business rates relief and have been for a few years now. Any properties with a RV of less than £12,000 get 100% relief. There is also a tapered discount for those up to £15,000 value. Also, the new owner of the Ridings has secured new tenants by offering cheaper rents along with other incentives. These two actions have quite drastically reduced the number of empty shop units within the last few years It’ll be interesting to see what the future may bring for both Barnsley and Wakefield centres
I bought my first terrace house at Busy Corner near to Manygates in 1982 always went to Jolly Sailor for Sunday session , like you say proper pub
The landlord was Martin Dale of Emmerdale Farm fame.. he was the local sergeant. There was another Jolly Sailor about 2 miles away at the bottom of Heath Common
From April regarding The Salt House. Have I read this that the owner wanted to sell the business? Might explain why they’ve not paid their rent?
I have seen it advertised for sale online. https://www.daltonsbusiness.com/lis...ey-based-highly-lucrative-for-sale-DB1604576/
They’ve put a statement out on their Facebook page Dear Salthouse Family, Following yesterdays announcements in the press and social media, we feel it only fair to publish a brief statement to our loyal customers and friends. Behind the great brands our team has created in Salt House and Black and White sits a couple of people desperately trying to deliver good change to the Town of Barnsley. We have no UK National support and we are an independent start up which BMBC encouraged to invest into the Glassworks. We launched in the Glassworks complex before it was fully occupied with other tenants and we have traded through the harshest times hospitality has ever faced. We fully respect the position of overdue rent arrears with BMBC, however the current economic climate has sadly made it very difficult to trade in hospitality. Whilst we respect the authorities position we do not necessarily agree with its social media delivery. We remain professional through this period trying to bring back to the table an agreement we thought we had reached but with now betterment. We are Barnsley through and through and we are currently trying everything to reach an amicable solution. Sincerely, TIG
Looks like they are close to an agreement with the council to reopen. The agreement is with solicitors to check it. https://www.barnsleychronicle.com/article/26521/deal-close-to-reopen-repossessed-bars
Perhaps it is Bossman, but it’s not fair on the council for them not to be paid rent, yet the business is quite happy to take customers money. So where is that money going? Any responsible business needs to pay its bills…
Good news, but the actions of the business are still very questionable. The owner can plead ignorance as much as he likes, but ultimately he’s the director of the business and will have known rents weren’t being paid from the outset. I don’t believe that an employee would make the decision to stop paying and not inform him immediately.
Interestingly, Cucina shut in Penistone after a fire, and has reopened as Chapeau. The director of Chapeau holdings was previously a joint director of True Independent Group, who currently own Cucina, Salt House, Black & White
It was a very old pub, certainly there in the 1850's, it had it's own brewery and malting attached...but by the early 20th century Clarkson's Old Brewery of Barnsley were the owners... it was Tetleys though when we were regulars there in the mid 1970's...a chap called Dennis was the landlord at that time.
He has now resigned from the council and says The Salt House won't reopen under his leadership, so still not clear what's going to happen. https://www.barnsleychronicle.com/article/26587/councillor-quits-over-unpaid-rent-arrears
Saw it earlier - what a mess! Fingers crossed someone can take it on and get it open for the busy festive period. It’s a real shame seeing such a prominent unit not being used. To be honest, I’m still surprised the one next door is empty. There’s been very little updates on the empty units since the leasing was handed over to Barker Proudlove. I’m hoping we’ll see some activity in 2024. I was in town yesterday and think the area around the bridge is looking great!
It was, but that obviously didn’t happen. The dedicated page on the website now just says ‘late Autumn’.
The council did the right thing with the Salt House but this has currently killed the square on an evening, nobodies about, just me walking the dog. It needs to sell fast before people get out of the habit and go elsewhere.
