Alhambra should never have been built, it's an eyesore and has been mostly full of scruffy shops selling crap since opening. Should have left the sex shop and don valley sports alone

I really don't understand this eyesore thing. What part of it is an eyesore? Compared to a lot of the town centre it's a thing of beauty.

Best thing for Barnsley would be if they knock down the bhs building and boots too and moved those into Alhambra. Fills that up with big name tennants and would create a lot of event space

I think it's an eyesore and always have because of its drab appearance that looks like a builders merchants amongst some decent old buildings at that end of town. I agree with you about bhs

The old BHS is being demolished as part of the Urbed Town Centre Strategy - that’s why New Look is moving into The Glassworks.

Noticed today that new look has window signage up in the unit next to next. Nothing has been posted on the glassworks official media though. You’d expect if they have their name in the window the legal side of things is done now?
Also I spoke to the woman in marshmallow blends and their unit is also being fitted now so how come there’s no official announcements?
Not important I know but I liobe what’s happening in the town centre and I just want the United full or at least people to know they are taken

also cruise finally have their images in the windows after changing from flannels

Personally think it’s much less of an eyesore than the gigantic mustard cladding box next to it

Think the Alhambra looks OK, nothing special but OK. It's quite old now and it still looks OK.

I think the Glassworks already looks dated and just not very nice. In a few years... Well, we'll see but I imagine it's not going to be liked.

Anyone been to Rotherham Town centre recently?

Would you rather it looked like that?

Think it looks fantastic imho. So so much better than the old 70s monstrosity that it replaced but I also agree we do have some lovely old buildings aswell which sadly seem to get overlooked.
Just today I was sat in the new square looking out on to Eldon street and the buildings on that road could be beautiful but sadly they are being left to rack and ruin. The three building from the bottom of the Victorian arcade which include the travel agents and the one with the clock would be stunning if restored but obviously landlords have no interest which is a shame

That begs the question what happened to the 5 or 7 million pound people hat was supposed to be spent doing up Eldon Street, including demolition of the choppy and the alleged gateway?
The civic was also supposed to be getting a refurbishment, some of the buildings look awful

Exactly. The actual buildings are really nice but need a good clean up and the signage changed to something in keeping with the building

Yeh I totally agree apart from the building being in poor condition overall I do wish the council would put some sort of order on these building’s to have a more uniform or sympathetic signage instead of the absolute mish mash they have now different sizes and qualities

Obviously they have demolished the end next to the bus station entrance but I do get baffled by the civic and it’s never ending refurbishment yet it so never seems to be open or completed

Yeah but there was supposed to be some sign or something as a “gateway “ to the town as people exit the interchange.

Craft Union tend to be leaseholds though rather than managed. Could be, but unlikely.

It’s being done as part of the public realm work with the bridge contract, though I expect Midland Street will be the last phase of work.

The ‘National Pub Chain’ I previously mentioned actually ended up being ‘The Botanist’.

Cruise is due to open in early September.
The Salt House should open soon, it doesn’t look like work has started on Friday’s yet.

Plans haven’t been submitted for The Botanist so I wouldn’t expect an opening date until later this year, they might be trying to coordinate an opening date in line with Cineworld.
