It seems that... ... the slightest bit of celebrity status and you’ve completely f*cked off your rights to be a tarn fan. So what if he writes average poetry, if he says he’s a fan of Barnsley Football Club that makes him alright in my book. Yet another shining example of the have nowt hating the have a bit.
I worked at this place where they employed aproper retarted to sweep up.He thought Ian Mac was a funny rapper. And he supported Halifax Town.I I'd have still been at that job if i hadn't got a bdetter offer.
He's a "poet" who, like most people fifty years his junior, always, always rhymes and rarely scans. He appears in local publications and occasionally on local television representing Barnsley with his talent. Personally I wouldn't be too perturbed if he went for a walk on the moors, drinking a can of Coors, thinking about taking a holiday with Airtours and fell down a big hole and was never found.
I think you'll find he's done a bit more than a few local TV appearances and a local paper column but if you want to stick to Keats and Wordsworth thats ok.
Ian McMillan needs no help You only have to read this board to see the archtypal person from Barnsley. It requires no input from McMillan. I find the rantings on here about Parkinson, Bird, Gough, Moxon and Ian Mc no more that petty jealousy. I can appreciate it if you do not like Ian's prose, but there is a lot more to the man than that, if you'd maybe gone to the the Huddersfield Choral Xmas show two years ago, or listened to Radio 4 instead of inane pop channels.
Don't have a problem with the guy, not too fussed about the poetry he comes out with but for people to say he trades on a stereotype is amazing, are these the same people who criticise someone for abandoning their roots? The bloke can't win really. I suppose they could go out and interview someone in the precinct who can barely string a sentence together instead. He went up in my esteem (not that it matters in the wider scale of things) when I saw a programme about the work he does going around schools etc and getting people interested in words and language....although I didn't agree with him when he said something about the spelling and grammar not being important.
RE: not a fan Got to disagree Jock, he was there at the first meeting when the fans got together to formulate a support base when we went into admin, he also was vocal on radio and Tv about the redfs plight.
Plenty of side stepping here I see. The issue however is not whether people are jealous (FFS - If I am going to be jealous, it would more likely to be over David Beckham, Jonny Depp etc not some d list local celebrity). The issue here is not whether he is a loyal Barnsley fan , the issue here isn't whether he is a technically a gifted poet..................the issue here is whether he- as a person in the media - helps reinforce a negative stereotype or does he actually help to show there is more to Barnsley than flat caps and whippets?? Perhaps I over estimate the people of Barnsley - maybe we are after all a set of intellectually challenged, unsophisticated Northern neanderthals. From now on, I won't try and defend our corner and instead make up a rhyme about Chips. Peas, Gravy and Yorkshire puddings to give people even more reason to take the piss.
No side stepping from me, I think you've misunderstood, I don't think your jealous. It's hardly an intellectual debate is it? Is Ian McMillan a proper fan......what right does he have......etc? ffs of course he gets wheeled out every time we have a media frenzy, that's what happens, journalists can't be arsed. That's pretty much life. Why not debate whether the journalists who grab him at every obvious opportunity are perpetuating stereotypes? Personally, I've never been offended by anything Ian, Dickie or Micheal Parkinson have ever said, I find Parkinson ridiculous when he's claiming to be a Barnsley fan. As far as I'm aware people regularly see Ian and Dickie at Oakwell. I just don't understand the frenzy everytime any of them are mentioned. People need to get over it and accept it. I thought the start of match of the day live was fantastic, as did most neutrals, christ Chelsea could have claimed biased reporting in my book. People are offended for no reason at all nowadays. You're basically lashing out at a bloke who does some rythmes in a Barnsley accent, who happens to be a Barnsley fan. He's visited schools up and down the country and kids love him. I don't actually think you're in his target market. I'm not a relative either, I've never met him, I don't know anything about him other then his media image, which I have no problem with and I certainly haven't read all his poetry.
Ian and Dicky Whatever the criticisms leveled at these 2, they have lived in the area all their lives and are both season ticket holders, I'd rather see either of them on telly than Parkinson any day.
