I was working in Huddersfield at the time and had nowt but grief from one colleague all week leading up to the game on the Friday night. I left a can of 7 Up on his desk on Monday morning and didn't hear a peep from him!
Eric Tinkler looked like Zidane that night, Peter Jackson on the other hand looked like a man already pondering life after football. Their keeper I think put in a claim for repetitive strain on his back, having to bend over 6 times in one half to retrieve the ball.
Bad choice of manager in Hendrie, he got rid of lads who'd done the job for us before. Richardson's legs were gone. The additions of Dyer and Hignett should have set us up nicely. Think Wardy left not long after Hudders game, I can remember Wimbledon had put a 4.5 million bid in around that time. Also thankfully Barnard turned down Southampton otherwise we'd have ended up with Carlton Palmer.......
Always had an aversion towards then Town Manager Peter Jackson. Suffered from a superiority complex, so it was great to see him squirming on the touch line as each goal went in. I used to drink in a pub in Ossett which was a hotbed for Terriers fans. My youngest lad had a part time job there and was on duty on the night of the game. Town fans were downing their drinks and telling anyone who would listen what they were going to do to Barnsley. They supped up and left for the game. When I got home from Oakwell my lad was telling me he'd never seen anything as funny. Round about ten past nine the bar door burst open and around twenty disgruntled Town fans who had left the game early piled into the pub. My lad said it was hilarious listening to them complaining about their team and Jackson in particular. One of the most exciting games I've ever seen at Oakwell. We were quite literally unstoppable.
I think I'm right in saying that Ward, Dyer and Hignett only played together that one time. Certainly, that's what my mate reckons.
What went wrong in 2000/1 season too? We lost Curtis (who wasn't ours), Eaden and Hignett. Did those three players make all the difference?
True. Ward has been sent off against Sunderland and so Huddersfield was last his match before suspension. Hignett's debut as you know. Ward was available for the Stockport match shortly after but, John Dennis put his put down and said along the lines of "I've done a lot of things in my career but I've not seen £4.5m stretchered off, he's not playing" or words to that affect (or effect, I'm never quite sure).
Yep. Huddersfield was Hignett's debut. Sunderland was the week before but in those days, disciplinary suspensions were not immediate. Hudds deffo the only game Ward and Hignett both played in.
Same here. Was central on the front row of the top tier at QPR and you couldn't see the bottom of the goal. Saw the ball hit the net though. Couldn't help but applaud that.
We must have been sat quite close together then. I remember being so stunned that I'd witnessed it, unbelievable.
