Apologies! Some people get so wound up and annoyed that they punch people and destroy things........I forget my punctuation!
They had the backing of the countries in the region at that moment in time, surely it would have made sense to get the job done then.
It may well have started the retribution that is being dished out by the Shi'ites to the Shias ( or vice versa ) that we are currently seeing sooner and that issue could have been resolved by now.

RE: They had the backing of the countries in the region at that moment in time, Think it was a case of "better the devil you know"
If the attack was gonna be carried out by Americans, then I dont think it was possible , however training up a few dissaffected Islamic fundamenalists cuts down those who need to be in the loop.
The Police fit people up , so I dont see it as being impossible.

So what changed? I think they could quite easily leave Iraq at the moment , as the locals are busy sorting out 500 years of animosity.
I think the troops would be better deployed in Afghanistan.

RE: So not even someone saying they overheard it? Believe what you like........ http://www.newyorker.com/fact/content/articles/060821fa_fact Seymour Hersh is the journo who broke Mai Lai massacre in Vietnam and more recently Abu Ghraib.
We'll have to agree to disagree on that mate. I can't see anyone being mad enough to take a risk like that.
RE: So not even someone saying they overheard it? Yes, but that is a world away from arranging for planes to be flown into your own, highly populated, skyscrapers.
RE: So not even someone saying they overheard it? Well that wasn't the point I was making, just replying to your comment about Israel and Lebanon.
They didn't topple Sadaam during the first Gulf War as they thought Iraq would just fall into civil war due to the many factions, event lately prove they weren't wrong. Since then, about 1992, Sadaam tried to assasinate Bush snr and almost killed his wife, Bush jnr's mum. If you want a reason for the invasion of Iraq look no further, no WMD, no link to Al Qaeda. It's a known fact that Bin Laden and Sadaam didn't like each other much.
That's pretty advanced conversation for you. I suppose it'll be someone else who lowers the tone though?
RE: So not even someone saying they overheard it? I didn't make a comment about Israel and Lebanon - just making a comment about a statement starting "apparently overheard". That's not to say that I don't think the US were involved by non-involvement during the recent Middle East crisis.
RE: Eyup, here we go. Im not the one who "wibble wibbles" so much that they have to hide their post count. (titanic)
What changed is that Sadaam tried to assasinate Bush Snr post first Gulf War and almost killed Bush Jnr's mum.
RE: I am at a loss why we didnt just pile straight through. Here's the answer, or maybe at least part of it.........
