If we are looking at single still shots then the first one luke has put up clearly shows Mellis with both feet off the ground, lunging in, out of control. Absolutely no chance of a successful appeal.

Personally speaking, i'm very surprised with the reactions to the game. Don't know if it's because of Danny's post-match comments, but for me the blame for that result sits squarely with us - no one else.

    - digby and hassell both left out of the squad
    - frimpong totally losing his head and perfectly justifiable second booking. moment of madness, when we were just getting on top
    - dawson brought on. carried on where he left off in the last game. dreadful. no composure, incapable of keeping the ball or passing it forward
    - never been a penalty. if it had been giving against us, we'd be raging. liera pulls his foot away, mellis then trails his foot and goes down. never a penalty for me
    - mellis then totally loses his head - two feet off ground, straight red. 100%. moment of madness, when we were back in it and at least a point was nailed on
    - late corner from cywka. option to keep possession and play the game out for a point. or at least find a red shirt. blazes it over everyone and immediately puts them on the attack
    - last kick of the game, o'brien with the option to put the ball in row z. opts for a 10 yard ball to their man, we lose the match

For me, all the reasons for us losing the game, sit squarely with us. I disagree with Danny's squad selection, I disagree with his tactical changes and I disagree with his post-match comments on the referee and penalty. Under Dave Jones at least, we mocked Wednesday weekly, for blaming the referee for everything.

Obviously loads will disagree with me. But I also reckon a fair few won't.

I realise that mate, but the very definition of running is two feet leaving the ground.

"Running is a means of terrestrial locomotion allowing humans and other animals to move rapidly on foot. It is simply defined in athletics terms as a gait in which at regular points during the running cycle both feet are off the ground. This is in contrast to walking, where one foot is always in contact with the ground"

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Running

If you have a freeze frame of anyone moving at pace, at various points they will have both feet off the ground. It's impossible to go from that in to a sliding tackle without you initially having both feet off the ground. Every tackle every footballer has ever done when running at pace will have a freeze frame like the one that Luke posted, where the player has two feet off the ground. What's crucial for me is that when he actually makes the tackle his back leg was on the ground and he won the ball with one foot.

There's definitely an opportunity to send him off.

Do you think, having seen the replay, he should have been sent off? I understand why he was, I understand that in real time from the side on shot it looks like a red card, but what I'm getting at is, if you study the video footage and really analyse the tackle, do you think we should lose Mellis for three games? Because, unless we appeal, that's what's going to happen and I don't believe for a second that is right.

well,i'm one that agrees with you.
and all this about poxy b@sterds,well,you make your own luck.
we threw a point away,as you say from the cywka corner.there couldn't have been 30 secs left on the clock at that point.

that ref wasn't good,no doubting that, but mellis left himself wide open doing what he did, some composure on his part and we wouldn't even be discussing a red card.
the leppings lane end view on the ref was that he was *****,the other three stands thought he did nothing wrong,if one or two think there will be some kind of investigation, then they live in cloud cuckoo land.

I remember that and thought ref got that spot on, it was a perfect tackle and he won the ball cleanly and fairly , bit of follow through to let him know he's there lol.
But to be fair, he was always in control of it and only had eyes for the ball and got the ball, the fact the pig player starts rolling around is nothing to do with it being a bad tackle more just that he can't believe he's just had the ball taken from him so cleanly..

Mellis on the other hand left the ground and genuinely did look out of control, even if it is only one footed. For the record I think mellis probably did get the ball but these days that doesn't matter if you leave the ground like that and are deemed "out of control"

This picture just totally contradicts everything I said about it in an earlier thread. But when first viewed it to me looked a lot worse and deserved a red.

These things just seem to build up against you when you are down and looking for an even break.

No point in crying over it we now must just get on with the fight and starting with a win v Ipswich.

You're bang on with a couple of things, it looked like a red card at the time and there's nothing we can do as far as the Wednesday game goes.

However, as it stands, Jacob Mellis won't be playing that Ipswich game. He won't be playing the two games after that either as the offence he is accused of doing carries a three game ban. I don't think that's right or fair. I think there's enough evidence there for his ban to be revoked.

I think these days that challenge is a red and I don't have an issue with the ref sending him off. Whilst both feet are off the floor when running, you don't transition into a slide tackle at your highest point. It's just not natural. You naturally do it by collapsing your back leg and allowing your forward momentum to carry you into the slide.

For his body to form the shape it does in the still where he is off the ground he has clearly not done that - you can see he is changing into a tackling shape at the height of his bound. As I've said before it's not natural to do that and he must have sprung off his last step knowing he was going to do it. He was therefore "out of control" in accordance with the current rules/guidelines and the ref was entitled to send him off. Whether such tackles should be red card offences is another debate entirely, but under the current rules I would say the sending off was correct.

Under the circumstances as you quite rightly say the punishment certainly does not fit the crime. But his previous yellow cards have come back to haunt him.

TBH he should never have even attempted to get that ball especially when on a yellow. So he is partly to blame for he situation. I think at the time he was an angry man for not being awarded a penalty. Had a wee bit of the red mist at the time. Unfortunately possibly could be said he cost us a point.

I agree with you totally - but I'd bet a pound to a pinch of **** that mariner will stand by his assertion that at the point of Mellis making the tackle he was out of control, and our appeal would be turned down.

EN when you watch it at normal speed it does without doubt look reckless. Like I said when on a yellow you cannot afford to be too gung ho with your challenges.

I was watching it online mate, and at the time I thought it was 50/50 for a red card. The fact it was deemed a straight red aggaravates it for me though.

Yeah hard one to call and maybe harder for the ref. Although reading some of you guys comments on the ref it seems he has never been a good appointment in the past. I still stand by what I said about him being on a yellow and having to be that more sensible. But like you say a straight red? From the picture no but viewed first time around possibly yes but definitely a second yellow.

I've watched Marriner reffing games before, not just with us and I've always thought he was too unpredictable to be fair. I wouldn't say he's got anything against us particularly, I just think that's him - will give decisions favouring one team or the other. Think he's generally an appalling ref.
