I've been banging that drum for years. People simply didn't like Sheron: the end.

    RE: Not worth it mate.

People know that I really like Hayes, but I suspect its because of the way I like to see football played and because I'm a striker myself and understand that strikers don't often get the credit they deserve for creative work and that the person who taps the ball into the net gets more credit than the man who beats a man and plays a perfect cross.

I don't argue with much that you said - but Sheron was far lazier than Hayes is - people seem to just completely ignore it and act like it doesn't happen when Hayes tackles back and chases and harries - and call him lazy just because he doesn't challenge for headers.

Another major difference is the fact that we paid £1.5m for a man who was over the hill in Sheron, and with Hayes, we've paid £150k for a man who has not yet reached his full potential and is only going to improve, and shows signs of that constantly.

    Just my opinion.

Oh, and Sheron was good in flashes, I had no real issue with him other than that the fee was absolutely ridiculous.

    Nah then

    I give you a job

I pay you 10 grand a week and I pay your former employer a fortune in compensation.

You come to work for me but you are not as good as everyone expected and everybody knows you get paid a fair wedge.

    Is that your fault?

And the financial climate in which we paid the fee and the wages to Sheron was very different from that of today.

You are wrong about the relative effort levels of both. So similar it beggars belief.

I think you are missing the point

and we'll see if Hayes does better than a goal every 5.

I don't blame Sheron for it.

I blame the club, because I don't think we got a good deal paying £1.5m for him.

But I do think we got a good deal paying £150k for Hayes.

Its almost natural that once people have made their mind up about a certain player, they stick to it. I like Hayes and probably ignore the bad things he does.

Admittedly, he should DEFINITELY have passed the ball when Howard and Ricco ran in early on. And he doesn't challenge for the ball enough in the air, but he put in a great ball for the goal, and scored himself.

And we also don't have any other player who would have brilliantly headed an almost impossible ball across the box for McIndoe, or who'd beat 4 men to set up McPhail at Oldham, etc etc etc. His good points certainly outweigh the fact that he doesn't challenge for headers and maybe doesn't quite score enough goals, in my opinion. I think anyone who thinks we didn't get a good deal when we signed him is deluding themselves about the type of player that they think we can attract to Oakwell. (Not necessarily aimed at you.)

    But in his Barnsley career..

Hayes has 15 (16 if you count the goal that was his against Rotherham but not credited to him) goals in 50 starts for Barnsley. Thats not disastrous - yes, he didn't score enough in the league, but the facts don't lie that he DID score goals.

Hayes and Richards statistical goals to games ratio in all competitions makes a bit of a mockery of the abuse that they get - particularly Richards.

    RE: Nah then

No. But I wouldn't expect my workmates or your company's client base to witness my mediocre performance and hail me as a hero for my troubles. I'd expect them to say things like, "He's stealing £10,000 a week that useless get. What a lovely person."

And I'd expect them to think that you, as the person who offered me such a contract, was an even bigger lovely person. Then I'd see out my contract with the bare minimum of effort, bank the cash and **** off.

Just like a certain Mr M Sheron.

I'm not saying he was even in the bottom 20 of players I've seen in the last 20 years, but when the stakes are high, so are expectations. In the ability to play football, as I say, not near the bottom 20 but in the inability to live up to reasonable expectations, he's in my bottom 3.
