It's not a good situation, clearly, and im not sure there is a perfect solution. Like i said though it's hard to prove that any woman who claims she was raped and doesn't get a conviction is actually lying. The fact we live in a patriarchal society doesn't help raped women to be believed. The police in particular have been particularly reticent about taking up rape charges in the past - as they have child abuse charges.

Sometimes the truth of an accusation and the decision of the jury happen to marry up. Sometimes they do not. Being not guilty in the eyes of the law is not necessarily the same as being not guilty in reality. So when people say "The person was innocent" it's not necessarily true. It seems obvious, but it's a subtle and important difference. But it works like this to give protection to the innocent person and to stop them going to jail (as the prosecution has to prove "beyond reasonable doubt" that the defendant is guilty).

Edit: lost my train of thought! -the above means that just because someone is found not guilty of rape charges doesn't mean that the other person was lying, only that the jury thought that there was not enough evidence to convict. The jury might *think* the person did it, but the evidence presented isnt enough to convict then they can't do so.
