I've had long debates with a Stoke supporter about where clubs should "expect" to finish based on economic competence ie income from ticket sales, sponsorship and financial backing. If you draw up a table based on this, the position a club finishes in relation to its economic competence is then down to management. Where would we be in terms of economic competence in the Championship? Would have to be bottom third surely?

So, in order to progress we need a manager to overperform.

If we are were we should expect to be then that suggests we have an average manager. We are actually in the bottom 3.

Yes, that's the implication - and the question is will the existing below average manager become above average with time? Can't answer that one.

    Lets get this straight

Barry Murphy is an Oakwell legend, I remember watching him in the late 70s. He is also a great guy who has time for anyone who wants to talk.

This is not a witch hunt, and the person who suggested it was needs to put my comments into perspective.

I suggested that as an employee of the club he should be careful about making statements that conflict with what the owner said, nothing more nothing less.

Barry Murphy is an Oakwell legend and always will be in my book, but we all know how things can be taken out of context. I think the original posting was mischief making.

I wonder if Patrick Cryne is happy to finish 5th from bottom this season, I Don't really think so.

we want to be top-----surely we all hope

can you imagine trying to sell the club to a player with the following.
player says where you hoping to finish then mr davey
davey says 4th bottom will do me lad

    player leaves never to return

    now it should be
where you hoping to finish then mr davey
with your help son top 3
    player signs

it doesnt take much brains to see what the club should be saying. (this is not a crack at what murphy said but what seems to come out of peoples mouths on the oakwell books)

a little tail about spud i once went to watch em train when they used to run down to canal and back up harborhills and back to oakwell. me dad took me to top of harborhills and a what should have been an empty milkfloat came up loaded with my heroes of the time we waited another 5mins and who was the only one run up the hill yes spud murphy great guy always a word and he loves this club
