Imagine this, a player is subbed and told to go off at the opposite side to the dug out. Whilst walking back the long way round fans abuse the player and it all 'kicks off' Cantona/Crystal Palace style and people get seriously hurt. After match post-mortem the governing body does a risk assessment. The first rule of risk assessment is "where possible eliminate the risk at source". The governing body comes up with "There is less risk to the public and players if substituted players exit the field at the dug out". So, back to square one.
