Nah mate, it's Plymouth on Tuesday

It was WBA on Setdi. It's very rare we play the same team 2 games in a row.

RE: Here's another view on this based on percentage of town population attending games

Red Rag I don't think that you've grasped what I was saying about generations of potential supporters. If a new generation of football fans comes along and the members of that generation see their team is doing well they'll adopt that team as their own, many of them for life. Barnsley's latest such generation has seen an average 3d division side only just stepped up to the CCC. They've already formed their attachment, perhaps to Leeds or Sheffield. But if Barnsley's relative 'success' extends to the next generation of fans then you'll see a significant increase in crowd figures. Kids are often snotty-nosed little glory seekers who choose to adopt a team only if it's going places. And once they've made the choice that's it. It's as simple as that.

In which case.....

... where are all the snotty nosed kids that supported the team in 98/9 99/00 00/01, Wembley, Cardiff, and yes.....dare I say Liverpool?

Recruit new blood by all means, but where's everyone else? That's all I'm asking SR. If the club cannot get people back with the football being played and the progress being made, what hope is there for major advancement?

Turnover is very different to profit

... especially when most of the turnover is spoken for and goes straight back out.

SAME OLD DAFT STORY..............there IS NOT 71000 people living in the Barnsley district

There are 71,000 living in BARNSLEY town.............BUT NOT IN THE BARNSLEY DISTRICT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't live in Barnsley but I do live in the Barnsley District where about 230,000 other people live
Add to this other areas which have strong links to the town of Barnsley e.g. they do their shopping there or use the Barnsley hospital etc etc and that number goes beyond 300,000
I'm talking about places such as Stocksbridge, Thorpe Hesley, Wath, West Melton, Brampton, Mexborough, Ryhill, Hemsworth, Midgely, Flockton etc etc etc

Therefore an average gate of 10,000 is absolutly woeful

RE: SAME OLD DAFT STORY..............there IS NOT 71000 people living in the Barnsley district

I agree that our attendances are poor but some of the places you mention in the Barnsley district have and never will be potential BFC areas of support.
Stocksbridge is a Wednesday stronghold and the same goes for Thorpe Hesley & Mexborough. Hemsworth is a traditional Leeds supporting area and Midgeley & Flockton is Huddersfield Town.
None of these areas have any affinity at all with Barnsley as a town and it's football club.
Whilst I agree it is unfair to just quote our population to be 71,000 (i.e. central Barnsley) it is equally unfair to quote the whole district population of 300,000. The true figure regarding potential support is probably somewhere between the two.

a couple of points

The borough population is of the order of 226k. The population density of the borough is comparable with Sheffield which supports two teams with 20k+ attendances.

Wakefield, a similar sized "city", is only 9 miles distant with no profesional club and it would not be unreasonable to suppose we could begin to draw more support from that area.

The chronicle for instance is sold in flockton and gives some indication that their are links. There are also plenty of barnsley supporters from Hemsworth area.

The club really does need to start thinking outside the box if we are to increase our attendances both from inside and outside the borough.

As far as I have seen the clubs "marketing" activities are largely limited to selling corporate packages.

RE: a couple of points..........extra

If people don't think there is support for Barnsley in places like Hemsworth, Wath, Mexborough etc etc, then they need to get into these surrounding towns when Barnsley are doing well.
i remember going into a Hemsworth estate when Barnsley had just got into the Premeirship and I couldn't beleive all the Barnsley stickers in peoples windows
OK, Hemsworth will be mostly Leeds supporters but there are loads of TARN supporters in these places

Unfortunatly they are not going to the WELL at the moment

Further shame of the Barnsley Public

A colleague of mine's wife is on the Manchester United young red devils administration team, he stated that the mailing list for the Barnsley postcodes area has 2.482 members whom are part of the Manchester united schemes for marketing and membereships purposes

Yes 2.482 children, that means that probably 2/3rds of the parents are Fans or attendees at Old trafford, the question is why are the club not investing more readily in the future fans of our club!!

Great Post

Speaking from a person perspective, I live about 70 miles away in South Derbyshire and my two lads always want to come with me to see the Reds. That means a cost of £44 to get in, £15 in diesel plus a bite to eat ect, you're talking £60 or so. If I came to all the weekend home matches, that would be something like £120 a month, which is impossible to find in my family budget. So far this season I've been to the home games vs Coventry, Cardiff, Southampton, Watford and West Brom which adds up to a total cost of something like £300 (I also went to Leicester but didn't take the boys).

Quite simply its too bloody expensive!
