This is a topic quite close to my heart.

Whilst I can understand how some people think it's 'Stupidity' I actually think it was a very valiant decision to make. She chose to stick with her beliefs. I couldn't have done that, but then again I don't believe in Jehovah.

I have close relatives that are Jehovah Witnesses and I cannot deny that I dread ever being faced with a similar event. However, I have to acknowledge that I would have to abide by their choice - it's their life!

They are nutters the lot of them

I used to live near oakwell and had to answer the door loads on a sunday afternoon to be faced with the beige trenchcoated weirdo "Michael" - He used to hang around the town centre too. Once stopped me and my mate on way to school to give us a copy of watchtower. He even onced tried knocking on our door at Christmas day, my gran told him to sling his bleeding hook !

Religion provides a great deal of comfort to a great many people and offers an infintely more acceptable alternative to acceptance of our own mortality and that of our loved ones. Whether we realise it or not we, as English people, run our lives by a Christian value system. There are basic rights and wrongs that we've grown up with and we don'tthink ofquestioning them. I think we could do a lot worse than our Cof E culture.

The Jehovah's Witnesses take their instructions from (and pay their considerable subs to) their governing body in the United States. You're seen as either a sheep or a goat. Goats think for themselves and are frowned upon and eventually cast out. Speaking from very close personal experience they're glassy-eyed zombies and pretty much to a man just regugitate their standard responses without actually thinking. I can truly say I've never met an intelligent commited JW. It's alright saying they have the right to completely misinterpret a phrase from ancient hebrew but what if it's a baby or a small child needing a transfusion?

By the way, apparently the operating theatre staff have the mandate to overrule the patients (or relatives) wishes under certain circumstances but rarely do so for fear of legal action.

There'll soon be just one religion in this country anyway so arguing over the rights and wrongs of the others will be like debating the finer points of cricket on a football messageboard in Brazil.

I used to work with one. Very interesting fellow.

Drank cider and sold refurbished laptops as a sideline to his IT job.

He put in a request to his boss for a day off. His boss asked jokinglywas he going for an interview. He replied Yes. Gobsmacked the boss asked him why he had told the truth. He said that it was part of his faith that they never knowingly told a lie.

For me Watchtower says it all.sat down having a picnic with a load of big fu-ckinglionsin the new Heaven on Earth - Arse.

Used to think the same regarding morality and its links to the Christian culture, but there's a strong argument in Dawkins' 'The God Delusion' to say that morality exists without religion, and is perhaps even stronger for it as people without religion find their own beliefs and have analysed the rights and wrongs of it without just reciting, or even basing them on, religious mantras.

Somewhat simplifying there, of course, but well worth a read.

I have concluded that pretty much most religions were created to satisfy those with little hope and those being oppressed. It stopped poor people asking those with all the power asking very awkward questions. How people have gone on to interpret those 'rules' over the following centuries is by the by.

That's theory is echoed in The God Delusion as well. Some very good arguments in there.

How good are the arguments? I could do with a strong one about who's turn it is to wash up.
