More miss than hit but he was dealing with a different market established professionals we are looking at 20-23 year olds if we are to progress.
I don't see how bringing in a load of younger player hoping to sell them on is progress... Were just back to square one at the beginning of every season/end of the January transfer window...
You look to sign 8 say. A) 1 is standout you use funds to improve the team again investing in potential B) 2 make good members of first team for little cost C) 1/2 make decent squad members to be replaced and improved when you repeat process at step a d) 3/4 fail. After not costing much and you look to recoup anything possible. You repeat that in 2/3 year cycles until you have improved the team and can move forward.
Or you bring in 8 they are all crap and you get relegated all while paying off countless managers...... It's a bit of a flimsy way of running a club if you ask me, If we can't run sustainably without relying on the chance of selling players that we hope cut it and can bring enough money in to keep us going then we are in trouble. What happens when we don't have anyone to sell and were struggling on and off the field?
You have to be good at it and it's not easy. Even those that gave been excellent at it such as Peterborough hit a wall sometimes. It should be if you can do it properly be an incremental process. The initial recruitment is very tricky and getting your recruits to play as a team is even harder as Danny found out. Of the younger players we bought Hourihane Winnall Berry Scowen Williams Davies Hemmings And our own 2 stand out youngsters in Holgate and Bree You could easily fashion stage 1of that plan from that lot. The idea gives you financial stability whilst allowing you to improve the team.
Key is having good talent spotters. You're right in so much that you can't afford to get it wrong often. But as JC says, you're looking at 30-40% of your buys to come good.
It's an age thing. It's a shame that Danny couldn't translate what I think is excellent recruitment of younger players not on the field performances. And that the second part of the recruitment where you recruit some older players to support and assist failed so spectacularly as of Ramage, Bailey, Lita, Treacy and Turnbull there's not too many outright successes in there.
