Just to clarify I think Thiam played well today, a massive improvement from the Scunny game. I just find it disappointing that he is incapable of completing 90 mins of football.
Didn't go yesterday, took my niece to the Caribbean festival in town, so can't comment on the atmosphere. But... Sometimes the team won't play well. Sometimes the crowd will be nervous and quiet. But the people of Barnsley are backing them. The attendances this season have been fantastic. What folk want is what you're delivering and they're backing you in huge numbers.
We were beating the mighty Gillingham at home in the 3rd division . I've watched Barnsley for the last 40 years and seen many a great game that made me want to jump and cheer from the rooftops unfortunately yesterday wasn't one of them , it was just a run of the mill game .
It's crazy! Some fans expect it all to go our way all the time, and flap at the slightest adversity. Bloke behind me was onto Davies and how he'd cost us lots of defeats and points. Really? We've only conceded 3 goals in 6 games he's played in - and still unbeaten! Some people are so intent on finding scapegoats that they'll delve back into previous seasons for the evidence. We should change the club's motto. What's Latin for "I know we're winning, but. . . " ?
Is that an official club statement? Please explain how folk making a racket would improve his fitness or shooting accuracy?
But part of the reason we are in the third division is down to Davies's abysmal form for pretty much the whole of last season. We need to look forward but at the time you cannot dismiss how bad this team was last season. I was getting as nervous as the players were when Gillingham scored. That's based on 46 games last season and not three or four this season.
Every game we've played has been "run of the mill", so why the noise v Oxford at home and nothing yesterday. The football was the same. 1 way traffic and 2 goals to the good at half time. Surely it's the football we enthuse about, not the the status of the opposition?
But that was last season. We weren't good enough, end of. You can't blame last season on you feeling nervous. I've been watching the reds 40 seasons, and that feeling has always been there, regardless. It's part of being a football fan. I can remember some fans moaning and groaning after losing 1-0 at Huddersfield after going 20 games unbeaten. Just enjoy it for what it is. Picking out negatives from winning performances is absolutely pointless.
That is just an exaggerated lie. Zero songs? Did you have your ear plugs in? Thought the atmosphere was great yesterday. I've been at Oakwell when its been like a morgue but yesterday wasnt like that. The players got nervous at 2-1 which transmitted to the fans as youd expect but to say there were zero songs and no encouragement is a bit far fetched.
I agree with Whitey here - I said it last year, he’s a confidence player. Back him, get behind him, and he’ll rip this league apart. He’s done well, puts a shift in and puts decent balls into the box. He wins pretty much every ball on the floor or in the air. 2 goals in 6 games as a left winger is a decent return isn’t?
This is a forum for Barnsley fans, of which I am one. I gave an opinion as a fan. No more, no less. I believe players thrive when supported. In times of adversity, the crowd rallying them will help. In my opinion. And the gaffer’s it seems. And others in this thread. And when we were nervy and under the cosh a bit yesterday, the crowd became nervous and kind of sat there waiting for the inevitable. I understand that, it’s hard to shift that mentality particularly after a season like the last one. It’s not world-ending and as I said elsewhere, the support this season has been great, particularly the numbers. So I’m not looking for an argument with you, mate.
We all exaggerate. Not sure I lied, mind. Because I’m not the only one to refer to this subject. I think we agree anyway, fluff aside.
Having played so well before Gillingham scored I think the prospect of not winning made everyone nervous the fans included. The nervy period at the end sort of took the gloss off the win, which in hindsight it shouldn't it was a good win. My original post about Thiam was not a knock on his ability more the opposite that it's a shame he fades in games when he plays so well for a hour like yesterday. Perhaps it didn't need to be said straight after a win and having slept this morning I feel a lot more positive about the game yesterday. Looking forward to next week now. COYR
I watched the highlights of the Liverpool game. It followed a similar pattern. Liverpool romping home 2 nil vs Leicester. Leicester pull one back and it was squeeky bum time. Shows even the top teams aren't exempt.
And it makes for a good game. It was nailbiting at Oakwell yesterday in that last 20 mins, we could've scored again, as could Gillingham. But with the games I've seen, I've been entertained, seen us under the cosh and turn it round, dominate and then had to dig in. All pretty standard parts of a football match I reckon.
Like I said to you after the game, "don't we make it hard for ourselves?" That's one way of looking at it, but of course it only looks like that because we've just had it our own way for an hour and looked superb. You're not going to have many games when the opposition doesn't have a go for at least a portion of a game, and at 2-0 down, it's caution to the wind time, just like it was for us at scunny last week.
