Even the League Cup has lost out to modern football, even though it was nowt compared to the FA Cup. Personally, i always looked forward to the first leg of the first round as it signified the start of the season when i was in my teens. Nowadays; it's all about the Champions League! All money orientated imo. We should bring back the Cup Winner's Cup methinks. That may help spice it up?
There wasn't much football on the TV. So all games that were felt special. Cup Final day and the rolling coverage all day was something else for a lad like me growing up in the late 80's, early 90's. The Palace/Man Utd final was sensational, soon followed by the Spurs cup run where I fell in love with Gazza. Even the Sheff Wed vs Sheff Utd semi at Wembley was special. I don't really remember many post-90's. The advent of football on the TV, all the time. It's diluted it.
There was never 50,000 from each side. Dignitaries and local FA accounted for about 40,000. Every single local team got 2 tickets allocated ( Had to be paid for) I went to 3 finals with tickets from the teams I played for.
Agreed - I went to many too. Happy days. I would say there were less corporate back then compared to now though. I'd also say there was a lot more than 100k on occasion. Saw many turnstile jumpers every time from the bigger teams. Man U / Brighton we were like sardines.
For a week or two before the cup final, all the lads at junior school divided into two camps every lunchtime, depending on who they wanted to win the trophy, and played a match on the school playground. I can still remember about 10 of us taking on about 40 other lads, because we were only ones who wanted Sunderland to beat Leeds. We got absolutely hammered every day... but it was worth it when we got back to school on Monday morning after the match. Good old Ian Porterfield!
I read somewhere the other week that the club's allocations were less than 30,000 each. Not sure of the exact figure, but Crystal Palace were allotted summat like 17,000 tickets when they got to Wembley.
I'm sure I read somewhere that the new Wembley was aligned so the centre spot would be in direct sunlight at 3pm on the first Saturday in May. Probably a load of old tosh but if it's true didn't that become an expenive waste of a design fee thanks to the demands of Sky etc!
Probably back to before you were born mate. Harry retired in 1961 and his sports shop in Cudworth became my go-to supplier for my Subbuteo needs!
Fans wearing rosettes, some with an FA Cup motive in the middle. Ours always stated "1912 FA Cup Winners".
Unfortunately, I am older than you may have thought. Harry Hough was in goal for my first ever match in 1955, when we beat Leeds 2-1. John Charles was in the Leeds side. Hough's son was in my brother's form at Holgate Grammar School in the late 50s. I used to get my Subbuteo teams from Hough and Midwood in the centre of Barnsley, on or very near to the Gas Nook, somewhere opposite the bottom of New Street. Midwood's shop moved to Shambles Street. I'm not sure whether Hough was still in partnership with Midwood then.
I seem to recall it was Ian Beale, off Eastenders, who was in the nets too. And Bernard Cribbins sang Abide With Me before kick off, I think. Great, great cup final. You were so lucky to be there.
Can only remember Daley really. 100,000 attendance with majority stood up. I was only 13-14 years old. Fantastic event and a cracking match.
When we played Man Utd in the 5th Round in 1965 we played in royal blue shirts and Utd were in all white
I was only 12, myself, but on the back of the ‘86 World Cup, my love for football was in full flow. Ironically, I dropped on Gary Mabutt, in Gran Canaria, in 2019, who pointed out that Coventry’s fanzine is called ‘Mabbut’s Left Knee’ on the strength of that being the result of their winning goal. We all, obviously, remember Keith Houchen’s beauty though. What a game.
