@ Nudger There are green shoots of recovery with respect to decent beer in town Both spoons, Old No.7 obviously pick of the crop but also Court House (Acorn), Chennels (Acorn), Heart of Barnsley (Marstons brands - Banks, Jennings, Wychwood, Ringwood etc) all doing cask. The only way to see it grow is to support it and drink in these establishments
Re: Some of us can still remenber what Barnsley Bitter tasted like Yes they do...one of the directors was evidently a former brewer at Oakwell. The company is quite secretive, for some reason, but one (or more) of the board has interests in a midlands based pub chain, and this seems to be where the bulk of the ale goes to.
Re: Two Barnsley Bitters? Acorn Brewery is in Wombwell, though Dave Hughes the owner was the last head brewer at Elsecar Brewery. Both beers can be called Barnsley Bitter..the court says so,although I believe the Oakwell concern have tried to stop Acorn using the name,a bit naughty considering Acorn were using the name before Oakwell set up.
