I posted this a while back but I'm going to post it again here as it's very much on topic - the Guardian Long Read about top level reffing, including a lot about our very own Darren England. Here's the text version, plus the podcast for those who want to listen in the car etc. A lot of the points covered are very close to what @KexbroughRed mentions in his post. https://www.theguardian.com/footbal...mol-howard-webb-andre-marriner-darren-england https://www.theguardian.com/footbal...b-inside-the-world-of-premier-league-referees
The whole system is wrong. It's another "club for the boys". The referees at the top table only get their because they are liked by the association. Assessor's can make or break what could be an excellent referred. I hated the assessors in the area where I used to Ref. Like the FA, too many doddering old idiots hanging on for a bit of power or stardom. Former lower league players should be fast tracked. Referees should be allowed to apply common sense, for the good of the game, without the fear of being marked down or taken off games for not being a robot.
They will be refs with this mind frame in more or less every single match. Makes us wonder wy we bother. Everything is corrupted
Thing is they can’t get the consistency at all. First match of season the Rotherham player gets what looks like a harsh sending off for supposedly jumping into the crowd, and asking for an opponent to be booked. Ok, that sets the tone … maybe the severity will make players think twice about their actions. Two days later, Man U player jumps into the crowd - no action. Players surround the referee - no action. The referee’s job is to implement the rules but they are incapable collectively to do it with any level of consistency whatsoever.

In rugby the Ref, linesmen and TMO (tv match official) work as a team. It's accepted that there is so much going on that something will be missed, so they can all alert the ref to a possible incident. Play is stopped and the TMO will highlight the incident and then the ref will talk it through with the whole team to make sure that protocols are observed and correct decision made.
