Reminds me of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The Planet Magrathea was so beautiful that it became a magnet for mass tourism and they got worried about planetary erosion, so all visitors were weighed on the way in and then on the way out, any weight gain being surgically removed before exit.
Ah but most of the hardline anti immigration lot don't need to worry about that because they don't believe in climate change.
Many of them will also be 6 foot under when it really kicks off. I will be as well but my kids or grandkids will live to see it.
Obviously the daily heil and their ilk are highly critical of the alleged 1 in 17 returns. Yet they were fine us throwing away £660m plus to Rwanda for just 4 volunteers (who were also paid) to go there. Balance and consistency of reporting at its finest!
Is it really going to be as much as a deterrent as they hope, or just some hot air to make it look like the government is doing something? Quick google at stats for this year and BBC throws up almost 20k have entered by small boat in first half of the year - on average that equates to 769 people per week. At the start they say they hope to send one back to France per week - I can’t see odds of 1 in 769 deterring many people. Even at that average arrival rate, if they ramp the scheme up to 50 people being sent back a week - thats still see the migrants only looking at 6.5% chance that it’s them being returned. Plus how do they choose who gets sent back. Is it first in, first out? Immigrants who’ve arrived the prior week? I think a lot more detail is needed before it can be celebrated as the win Starmer thinks it is
People voted for Brexit to swap European immigrants for Commonwealth immigrants - by which I mean those from Africa and Asia - and now they are complaining about the African and Asian immigrants that are coming here. You really should not have listened to the liars peddling it to you because we are utterly screwed without immigration. And now the same people are leading the complaints about the immigration that they lobbied for. Irregular migration is at a high level at the moment - due to Israel/Iran/Palestine/Syria and various conflicts in Africa/across Asia. It has been as high previously - in 2002/3 - when it wasn't such a problem because the Tories hadn't completely destroyed processing in order to win votes and give backhanders to their mates who owned hotels. If we are a Christian country, then British values are Christian values - to help those in need at their time of need. But the same people who complain about British values being destroyed are the ones who are destroying British values by not helping those in need. And as others have said, you can't claim asylum unless you are on British soil and the other routes have been closed. So small boats are the only option for anyone trying to claim asylum here. You could stop them tomorrow by opening a processing camp in France (they have already suggested this) and putting them on a ferry. But the right wing media would have a fit.
As I understand it, they will open a migration office in France to process people making legitimate asylum claims, and send back to France those in the country who don't have a legitimate asylum claim. If all those people arriving on boats are just doing so because they don't have access to an official route and have legitimate asylum claims- as opposed to just being economic migrants - then it should all be good. I'm guessing though that maybe not all the people coming on boats want to make themselves known via an official route regardless......
It may be illegal to offer people boat rides if unlicensed, not having enough life vests or safety equipment and not using proper border controls.
What a world. The same people who voted for Brexit are complaining about migration of non EU people into the country. Despite being told in advance that this would be what happened. Complaining about people ‘illegally’ entering the country when there is no legal way to do so unless you are from Hong Kong (which is of course ravaged by civil war and famine), or Ukraine. But no acknowledgment from these folks that Brexit caused or at least worsened the issue… There is also a massive correlation between the Brexit voting anti-immigration folk, who will also be hugely against any reduction to pensioner benefits, will be aghast at the state of transport and public services etc - but who have no notion that we have an ageing population and declining birth rate. If we don’t increase the birth rate - and people baulked at a suggestion of removing the two child cap - then WE NEED MIGRANTS to plug the labour and working age tax payer gap. There’s also, I’d wager, a decent correlation between them, and those who are hugely against inheritance tax, wealth taxes etc - but it doesn’t matter about any of that as all the problems in the U.K. will be fixed by getting rid of the foreigners. It’s all their fault… Badenoch has had her say again yesterday. By which I mean she blamed anyone on benefits and name dropped foreign people. Good work Kemi. It ain’t like your mum intentionally came to the uk to birth you just so you could benefit from it in future life, you ladder pulling, horrid hag of a woman
Funny you should mention that - I was listening to Why You’d Want to Live Here by Death Cab for Cutie earlier and it always makes me think of that: "I drank from a faucet, and I kept my receipt / For when they weigh me on my way out / Here, nothing is free".
Not sure if you 're up to date on this topic? Starmer has been working with the French government to 'break the people smuggling gangs' since he came to office. It's a policy both governments agree on due to both the tragic loss of life and revenue it provides for criminal gangs. I've long said the best way to solve the problem is to open a well staffed British asylum processing centre in Calais. I don't love the one in, one out policy by any means, but it would achieve vetted, genuine asylum seekers, would save lives at sea and beats the status quo.
" If we don’t increase the birth rate - and people baulked at a suggestion of removing the two child cap - then WE NEED MIGRANTS to plug the labour and working age tax payer gap " The problem no-one seems to address though is that, migration is an understandable quick fix now....what happens in 20-30 years time when the migrants that have plugged the gap we have now become pensioners themselves?...it seems rather like a pyramid scheme that has no end.
There is a plateau to the demographics. If we can get to 2040 or so, then the number of pensioners will then start to decrease again - coinciding with the fall in the birth rate from the late 60s onwards. Once we get to that stage, we can reduce immigration to keep at a steady population. And tbh, we are never going to increase the birth rate unless you start taking rights off women. Educated women with access to birth control want fewer kids - pregnancy is a life-changing medical condition for many, and life-ending for some.
That’s the point - we have a lack of people in that age demographic due to the birth rate declining for a while; 15-20 years from now we will have fewer pensioners but need to pay the ones we have now. Birth rate could do with being addressed long term though it is unlikely to have much effect - and short term we need oven ready labour, aged 18-30 ideally. By the time they reach pensionable age we could have a more level spread of age of population and could at that point limit immigration and maintain the population at the level it is at that point.
The lefties love the boat crossings no coincidence it's at a record high since starmer. 1 out 1 in capped at 50 a week won't make a difference. Costing the country about 10 billion a year but the lefts answer TaX tHE rICh
