I have worked alot with mental health staff whilst I have been in the job. I think you have a very difficult time. Sort of see a different side to it now. Dealing with MH patients whilst in the police is one of the most difficult things.

    RE: I agree...

hahaha we agree then. I don't like the look of the film of what happened in this case. But more so I don't like the way the media try to create hysteria about police brutality. It is not helpful to anyone and certainly does no good for the bobbies relationship with the public. It is easy to scream police brutality without giving a fully assessed report. It doesnt make headlines to report fairly. But cheap news is bad for us all.

Didn't say you have mate - and I'm sure the majority of your colleagues haven't either.

But the way you go about your business has definitely changed for the worse and as I say you've lost the respect and confidence of the public as a result.

as I understand it "reasonable force" under law is determined by circumstance, hence if as part of my job I'm faced with a dangerous situation I would be allowed to use as much force as necessary to protect myself which could go beyond mere restraint.

    Yeah

If you can justify it, you can use as much force as necessary to protect yourself. Common Law Powers. Obviously if I tried to hit you and you shot me you would have to have really good justification.

    Yeah right....

Try telling that to POVA, the NMC, CSCIand yes, to South Yorkshires finest. One rule for the coppers, a different one for the rest of us, how often are you likely to run into such a situation in your line of work? Could you lose your career, your pension and the ability to work in your chosen field in any role if you risked using what you consider reasonable force? We don't even talk about self-defence now because the "authorities" see only the poor vulnerable service users side and the instant self defence is mentioned you are immediately assumed to have assaulted and abused. We now use the term self protection - defence implies force, protection does not.

RE: What would have you done?

No disrespect, but what a silly question.

In the first place, I made no comment about this particular incident. I refrained from doing so because I know nothing about it other than the BBC report. How can I comment on something when I know nothing of the circumstances?

In the second place, you are asking me to compare what my actions would have been with those of a trained police officer - in circumstances with which he will have had far more experience than I have - which is none whatsoever.
