Yeah, and Plymouth proved it this season, make a good start and it obviously gives you a massive advantage. It reminds me of that little phrase... Well begun, is half done!. I hope we're not going to be playing catch-up again, in the first quarter of the season.
Definitely another left back and centre half. Maybe a second centre half if Jasper Moon isn’t wanted but I do expect him to be given the chance after his form at Burton last season. Another two midfielders as Benson and Wolfe are injured. That may increase depending if we keep Connell. I also expect offers for Herbie Kane as well to be honest. At least one striker. Maybe more depending on what’s happening with Aidan Marsh and Iseka. Another five minimum. That could well rise to 10 or 11 if we lose a couple and don’t trust Moon and Marsh.
You genuinely believe we need another full 11 if 2 players who didn't play for us last year aren't used..?
Didn’t quite say that. We’ve lost six loanees and Andersen. Lose another couple not including Moon and Marsh, that’s eight or nine out of the window. Tedic, B.Thomas, Andersen, Watters, Larkeche and L.Thomas were in every squad, every week. That’s six that definitely need replacing. Never mind those we may still lose. Coincide that with the two new signings. We’ll easily reach ten.
We currently have one left back, five central defenders that include a non league signing and Jasper Moon. We could easily lose Kitching. We have six central midfielders that include long term injuries to Benson and Wolfe. Connell and Kane will have interest. And we have five strikers that include 33 year old James Norwood, Iseka, Oli Shaw and Aidan Marsh. I’m not saying we need 10 or 11 now, I’m saying that’s potentially how many we could end up signing.
XI: Collins, Williams, McCarthy, Cundy, Kitching, Cadden, Phillips, Connell, Kane, Norwood, Cole. Subs: Killip, Lopata, Cotter, Russell, Styles, Leya Iseka, Shaw. There's a good reason we aren't signing players left right and centre. Of course, we will sell a few of the above. And, bring in more players. But we are hardly in need of making a tonne of signings. And the gaffer arrives Monday. Makes sense to have him assess his squad first, no? You can chuck Searle, Moon, Winfield, Wolfe, Benson, Marsh, Jalo, Dyer into the mix as well.
For me we have 6 gaps in the squad assuming none of Gally's XI leave. I assume Leya Iseka and Styles will be sold/loaned out again. 1 x CB 1 x LWB 1 x CM 1 x No 10 1 x No 9 Target Man 1 x Pressing forward I would expect 4 of them to be on loan. Probably two of the attackers, the LWB and the CB. The CM will be an up and coming player from the lower leagues as realistically Kane, Connell and Phillips are probably as good a midfield 3 as you will see in League One. We have also just extended Ackroyd's contract and he's 20 now so will be looking to break into the first team. We still have Wolfe and Benson to come back. Owen Moxon would be a decent signing. The number 10 will be key in my opinion. Someone to operate in the half space between attack and midfield. Phillips is a good goal scoring midfielder but it's more coming from deep. I think we need another option, a player who can pick up the ball and run at defenders but can also be the link between midfielders and strikers.
Moxon, apparently we were interested at the very end of the season. Peterborough were sniffing around and he just said he was happy where he was. Would be a decent signing as you say, good age and would be be good to see if he can step up consistently. He was an assist machine last season, but I suspect we won't get him, I assume we're looking at other positions first and probably hoping for a decent midfielder on loan considering we've already got plenty
I bet the Derby faithful are ecstatic with the blockbuster signing of Connor Washington ,he's done **** all for a few seasons.
There’s a good possibility that we’ll make some good signings and progress. But it’s also possible that we have the season we all thought we’d have last season. If that was the case and I hadn’t lost faith in all things football, I’d call it a transition season preparing for a big push next time. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be such a thing as transition anymore, if the manager shows that he’s done a good job, the offers come in and he’s gone.
Hmmmmm I don’t think we really need to sign many. Would rather 2 quality signings came in at striker centre back than a raft of players. we have a solid squad
Khaled had made a big point of saying before that a big failing in our championship relegation season was the slow recruitment and not having things in place for pre season. (In terms of coaching staff and players) So we are here again which isn’t his fault but again it’s going to be a contributing factor so we can’t leave things waiting too long or we are going to end up with our 2/3rd choice signings rather than ones we would like to make the longer it takes.
It's as if people think we're going to start the season without having made any more signings. Good grief.
Need two strikers and a centre half. A midfielder who can run with the ball as a bonus. We did our recruitment last summer and they've had a year to gel. Make Connor Wickham the first of those signings.
I'd choose a different back 3, but the point remains. We're not signing players late, we've already had them at least 12 months. We've already got a good squad, we don't need many signings. I reckon we could comfortably make the play-offs without signing anyone.
Good thread, good posts, we have a decent team, replace mads, get in a few loanees an wer off, onwards an upwards. C,O,Y,R.
I'm not worried just yet. Of all the teams in the division, we are probably the best placed in terms of squad. Of the loanees who have gone back, only Bobby Thomas doesn't have a ready replacement already at the club, and Mads Andersen is the only regular first team player we've to replace. We have signed a centre half, and I wouldn't read too much into the level he's stepped up from, as the circumstances around his last couple of transfers are bizarre to say the least. In terms of a starting 11, we should still be able to put out 8 of the players who started the play-off final, which given the last few years, is an absolute luxury (you could even argue putting Norwood in for Tedic strengthens it). We of course need improvements and depth, and in all honesty, it will probably take us until the end of the window to get everyone in (particularly if we're reliant on the loan mskret again). But I'm not worried just yet, particularly if we sign a centre half and a centre forward in the next 2 weeks. Good to see Derby's transfer policy hasn't changed. Ageing, expensive, over the hill, injury prone players with no resale value. Never learn. I rate Bradley, but getting him fit might take half the season. Washington doesn't strike me with much fear. Portsmouth appear to have signed a lot of players with either no experience, or average players for this level. Anthony Scully is a good signing for them though, one I wouldn't have minded to replace Luke Thomas. Charlton have recruited well, and were on an upward curve at the end of last season. They have lost their best player who was on loan, and there's rumours of Leaburn leaving, who had a breakthrough season for them last year, so they might just be forward planning.
