RE: More a case of the press jumping on the bandwagon I think Perhaps, but I think at least one stamp has always had some reference to Christianity.</p> This year, not one denomination has a theme that reflects the actual basis of Christmas.</p>
2003's don't look very religious http://www.royalmail.com/portal/rm/content2?catId=7500080&mediaId=5500063 I'm sure there must be a website that has them all on! They normally have a specific theme, so they tend to either all be religious or none are.
And neither do 2004 http://www.bfdc.co.uk/displayCover....String=Covers in stamp issue 'Christmas 2004'
Or 1983 http://www.bfdc.co.uk/displayCover....String=Covers in stamp issue 'Christmas 1983' That's just some I've picked at random
Are you gonna go on like this? A Christmas star, which is a religious symbol is quite clearly shown in the 2003 set.</p> Both Christmas and Bethlehem are quite clearly mentioned in the others.</p>
No - just thought I'd post a couple of examples And where on the other 2 sets of stamps (not on the first day cover envelope) is there reference to religion?
Funny but.... I always thought the word "Christmas" somehow suggested religion.</p> And most of us (probably) would associate Bethlehem with Christianity.</p>
RE: Funny but.... But those are on the first day cover NOT on the actual stamps. I don't think many people see a first day envelope cover. You were talking about the stamps. http://uk.news.yahoo.com/06112006/323/church-posts-anger-christ-free-christmas-stamps.html The post office alternate each year and have done for years. now if you are arguing that they should always have a religious theme then that is different to saying that this represents the thin end of the wedge when it is nothing new. My mum, who was a regular church goer always used to complain about anything that took away the religious meaning of Christmas, and that would include stamps, Christmas cards that only had winter scenes on, the word Xmas etc. A picture of a Christmas tree or of Santa is not religious but does have a direct connection with Christmas.
Wedges, thin ends This 'wedge' must have a multitude of ends, and they have all been suggested as 'thin' at various points. Probably 95% of the Christmas cards anyone has ever got have not had anything to do with religion. This is just people looking for any old 'politically correct gone mad' story to whinge about.
RE: Wedges, thin ends I just feel that some peoples faith must be so flimsy if it is threatened by the absence of a picture of Baby Jesus on a bit a adhesive backing.
