He's a coach at Bury

Crap little article with him in the pre-season 'programme' they were selling. Goes on about him utilising all his years as a pro, and how his experience will only benefit those around him - mainly kids. I think he's working for their academy or something. If only we had coaches of his standard...

    Why aren't we ?

Not having a go at you mate, it just seems to be a buzz phrase at the moment. Can someone please explain to me why ? Most clubs played that system for years.

There was a 'buzz' phrase on football heaven about three years ago where a lot of the calls were along the line of " hi, it's agrumble about XXXXX" (the manager) "He's tactically naive" I always wished the host would ask in what way and what tactics would the caller employ.

I'd say that we're trying that formation, not because Davey's trying to get Reid in the team, but becuase he's aware Werling isn't good enough defensively in a 4-4-2 and with Hassell and Bruma injured we're having to play people out of position (ie Souza). Therefore, until Hassell returns we're trying to play the formation that best suits the players we have available.

Personally, I like the fact we're trying it rather than play people out of position, for example, R Williams in midfield!!

My bet is as soon as Hassell is fit we'll go back to 4-4-2 with Kozluk at left back and two of Reid, Nyatanga and Souza at centre half.

I'm not entirely sure what the general understanding of football formations and systems are, but it's not as simple as where you stand before the whistle blows. Due to differing fitness levels, varying physical strengths and aerial abilities of players all over the pitch. It's at best, naive to think you can pick a team on paper to face another team on paper (or video) and that'll be okay and you won't need to react and make changes within the first 10 mins. And no I'm not talking about substitutions.

I'm talking about the players on the pitch understanding what decisions they're allowed to make by instinct without being worried about they're boss throwing a hissy fit. Swapping players they're marking etc pace verses power and all that malarkcy, organising themselves basically, because they understand each other and their own strengths and weaknesses. I think that's a team. I could be wrong though. I could learn it in theory and be corrected though.

That kind of team only ever emerges through great leadership and I'm not entirely sure a good or even exceptional coach always makes a capable leader. They're two very different things.

People have said plenty of times on here that the team picks it's formation. It's clear that at this precise moment, Davey and the players don't know the team. Hopefully it will emerge. Tinkering won't fix it either.

3-5-2 would imply that the CH's might spend some time defending by the touchline.

Not the strongest suits of our current CH's

No idea. Definitely not at work, though. Honest.

He's scouted Werling though. We've been assured he's had a good look at all the players. If he's now finding out that Werling can't play left back, who was he watching when he decided to buy him? Unless, of course, he bought him to play midfield, 'cos we are looking a bit weak in that area...

Did he see any centre halves ? Because he can piss about with formations all he wants but it doesn't hide the fact that we simply aren't good enough in that department.

We've got Paul Reid for another two years. We'll be fine.

Good defensive midfielder. Might turn out to be a good sweeper in a 3 man central defence a'la Matty Appleby. Not quite there for a back 4.

Think we're relying on Hassel's returnto organise things messen like. Although after talking to Davey last season I got the impression he didn't see Hassell as long term centra half solution.

Weve got a french centre half on trial, and that irish lad.
