    a little note

the pits wouldnt have been closed in the manner that they were if the miners hadnt gone out on strike. It obviously disrupted any planning thatmay have occured if not.

    RE: a little note

yep, i appreciate there are two sides to every story but my point was that there is not a great parallel to be drawn between miners and the financial sector.

    RE: a little note

I guess not because it is unskilled V skilled.
There isn much difference between mining and steel or mining and the rover redundancies though and i dont see a lot of sympathy for them from the ex miners.

What realy pisses me off is people that say "fecking government took our lives away... *coughs*...im glad them ******* pits are closed, it was terrible conditions"

    It affected communities

Once pits were closed , as there was little or no alternative employment . Businesses which relied on the spending power of these communities , ie the local shops , also saw their livelihoods extinguished . The housing market collapsed , meaning that even if people wanted to get out and start afresh elsewhere , they couldn't sell up and move . Crime escalated due to the mistrust between community and police . This had happened before , in different parts of the country , when steelworks , car plants , textile mills and shipyards had been closed down too . I am unaware of those consequences resulting after the closure of , say , a branch of Nat West . I am not treating any job loss flippantly . I am merely stating that the actions of the Thatcher Government in the 1980's had far reaching effects on the Barnsley area , for no other reason , certainly not economical , than a personal desire to beat the miners and the mining communities .
    Unfortunately , she succeeded .

    Highly skilled but limited?

Now who would you blame for that the employer? Education is the key here to making yourself employable and adaptable. People become self employed they foster a gap in the market, look what happen to the dinosaur they died out because they could not adapt to a changing enviroment.

    miners were skilled workers

not unskilled however but they worked in the primary sector. There is a big difference between the rover collapse and the mining. rover are a private enterprize; the miners worked for the government and with that i think the government should have been responsible for handling the whole situation a hell of a lot better. i suppose it depends on your political stance but i think that the approach was inhumane and i would never support an inhumane government.

    RE: Highly skilled but limited?

well that comes down to your political stance and you must be a proponent a completely free market? i think there was a responsibility of the government to handle the matter with care so the closure of pits and privatisation had less of a dramatic effect on communities and a negative effect peoples lives.

Are you really comparing dinosaurs and unemployment?

I doubt they had Job Centres back then.

Or night-classes on "how to adapt to the changing atmospheres"
