Seems a bit of a mixed bag. Way I see it is it's the context in which it's used, rather than the word that is racist. As far as I'm aware the girl was just using it as a way to describe Japanese people, in a shortened way.
Flat head, jerry ,kraut, cant think of anyway to shorten German, you cant really say Germ it dunt work
A mixed bag?, the people that think calling a Japanese a jap is racist, really does need medical help! It is no way at all racist
If Jap and Chinky (i.e. shortened versions) can be called racist , then surely this can be deemed to be too........unless he's a chocolate bar Is it racist to call an American a Yank ? Yes I do go for a Chinky
Anybody who doesn't agree that it has racist connotations needs some serious history (culture, literature, etc) lessons. Ultimately, no word is inherently racist - it's their historical meanings and cultural significance which can make them so. And that, when it comes down to it, is a matter of opinion. But pretending that it's in no possible way racist, and that people who think it is need medical help, is adding nothing to the debate whatsoever. It just makes you look ignorant.
Racist no, but some may find it offensive and others would possibly be puzzled because Yankee specifically refers to people from the north-eastern states who fought for the Union in the Civil War.
Sorry don't know history don't Evan need to know about the past, it's not going to get me anywhere in life. Useless knowledge.
