Depends largely on the historical context in which the word was used and. Jap isn't racist per se, but clearly WW2 had a large effect on the usage and connotations of the word.

If I said "I love Jap manga culture" it clearly means something entirely different to, "****ing Jap's".

    We've just had one.

And we both referred to it as a chinky.

Its the language I was brought up with and ive never come across (until now) it ever being referred to as racist

I wouldn't say Jap as it could be offensive, if in doubt just don't say it unless you don't mind offended Japanese people. I used to call Chinese chinky when I was younger until I knew better. I always called the local shop the Paki shop too, again, until I knew better. I am pleased to say that after a bit of work I got my parents to stop calling it that, and now even my nan doesn't (who isn't intentionally racist/trying to offend anyone, that's just the language she was brought up using).

How can you know how the world is like it is today without understanding how it got to be like that?]

And how can you cope if you don't understand the world today?

    You're missing so much.

I am fully aware of today's world, it's history that doesn't interest me, I know the important history. Why would I want to know why we call a jap a jap?. It's easy they call them a jap cos it's short for Japanese, doesn't take Einstein to figure that our.

No, you just think you know about todays world, but without an understanding of history you are ignorant of the reality.

You said had no idea of the involvement of the UK versus the 'japs' (it was just the americans and pearl harbor).

So, a very quick history lesson -

    Hong Kong
    The International Settlement in Shanghai
Loss of HMS Prince of Wales & Repulse
    Malaya
Singapore - esp. the largest surrender by UK forces in history
    Dutch East Indies campaign
    Burma
Prisoners of War, death marches, treatment by Japanese, Burma Railway, River Kwai Bridge.
    Chindits
    Andaman Islands
    Indian Ocean Naval war
    Imphal & Kohima
    Role of India
    RAF in India & Burma
    India-Burma-China Air campaign
    44-45 Burma Campaign.
    Submarine/Anti Submarine war

That's 70 years ago, then you have the followups on what happened after the war, Independence of former colonies, Communist uprisings in Korea, Malaya, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia. How they were resolved. Hong Kong handover. Current religious tensions in Indonesia, Burma, India, rise of China, Taiwan, geo-political tensions over islands in the South China Sea.

I could go on, but I only know a small percentage, however, I am trying to increase my knowledge as it helps me understand the world.

Seems like you know your stuff.
But why would knowing all that history is going to make me understand today's world? Things change, people change and adapt to the modern day. I have never had a conversation with anyone about jap history. Today's society is completely different, bearing in mind I am 26

China, Japan, Tawan and the US are currently on high military alert in the South China Seas, right this second China & the US are flying combat air patrols in a show of strength over some ****ing useless island chain virtually no one has heard of before.

    Why?

    Mineral rights.

The islands are disputed because of what happened 70 plus years ago.

The world might go to a big f4cking hot war and you don't know why.

That's all about greed and wealth, having the power of mineral land, to make a profit of us! Let them get on with it, I doubt they will be a big war, cnt see that happening. Don't think it has nothing to do with what happened 70 years ago. I won't lose sleep over it, I understand what's happening in my little world, I work provide for my family and pay my mortgage. That's all I care about.
